Gankers are pathetic

Firstly, this isn't about how much I hate world PVP. World PVP is fine. Someone around about my level wants a piece of me? That's fine.
What riles me up is the blantant (and often repeated) killing of lower level players. For seemingly no reason whatsoever. There are no rewards for mass murder. And there can't be any kind of satisfaction from one-hit killing people, can there?
Then again, knowing what some of the internet population is like...
However, I hit a bit of a breakthrough just now. Was doing the pre-quest walk around in CoT with my 66 Orc Shaman. Right at the end, a bunch of alliance 80's flew in, and two of them instantly ran up to me and killed me. My reaction?
Just a sigh, waiting for the Priest to get off my corpse, hitting reincarnate and finishing the quest.
It's still pointless. It's still stupid. It's still boring and skilless. But at least I'm not angry about it. I'm just filled with pity for these people.
Personally I'm all for a redesign of the honour system to remove rampant ganking from the game. While alot of people will scream in horror, Dishonourable Kills need to make a comeback. Or just an outright stop to attacking players 6 levels below you.
Balancing that, of course, would be a new debuff added to players who attack higher level players (or even heal higher level players, perhaps) that makes them 'fair game' and open to all attacks for a certain amount of time.
Being able to quest without fear of level 80's proweling the world searching for cheap thrills would greatly enhance the quality of PVP server playing, and would force gankers to either pick on players who actually have half a chance of defending themselves, or picking on players their own level.
But then, these people are cowards. So they'll probably just quit and complain.

I hear you but I think in practice World PvP in WoW has failed. The game design is fine, but the ethos is not there. I leveled on a PvE server with the PvP flag on and occasionally had some PvP of similar level, which is fine. Since about BC, my experience was to be fishing, farming elementals, or something and then a rogue comes in stealthed, stun locks, and kills me. What is this player adding to the game other than the huge inconvenience of speccing and gearing for PvP when you don't want to. Much simpler to turn the flag off.
There are exceptions though. My most positive one was killing beasts around South Shore with a low-level Alliance character. An undead priest shows up, mind controls, buffs fortitude, and lets me go.Posted 11-02-2009 at 07:43 AM by Machus

ganking is fun

All it is, is time.
Some people get a thrill off wasting other people's time (usually the same crowd that enjoys watching Punked, or 'man gets hit in crotch by football') to each their own. *see above comment*
I experienced 'world pvp' on a pvp server. What it was was about 50% levelling, 50% running back to your corpse...again. It just wasted my time with zero enjoyment. I don't reccomend a world pvp server with current rules (and I came from an mmo that had pvp rules of 'anytime, anywhere') mostly because there's nothing on the line except my time. I consider it valuable - yes, even when I piss it away on a game.
I like honourable combat, where I fight an opponent at their best, when I'm at my best. Dueling is silly. I want something on the line. I'll stand there, axe in hand, watching the red decend, grin on my face and ready to charge. (usually a couple swings in I'll know when I've met my match and perhaps settle with a stalemate. I mean, honestly, who lets a warrior get away? If I can't kill them, I'll let their cronies do it out of shame.)
My best achievement, is single-handedly deterring horde from southshore just by standing there flagged. Sure, one rogue enjoyed ganking the flight master and running (until he died bleeding) 3-4 more horde just stood there unflagged. Granted, they were mocking me, but they didn't do anything to help their 'brother in arms.' In my mind, I won - even if it was terribly boring.
A PvE server doesn't mean that you never pvp, it just means you get to meet characters at their best - or basically, they're ready to fight. (unless they did something stupid like flew over WG and landed in front of 100 alliance at ToC) In fact, WG is where I like to farm simply because I have that pvp element engaged with other 80s. There's something on the line - resources. I also chat with others between battles, if hordies have shown to be particularly good. However, many of them are just as cowardly and even moreso. I just hate the cheese that goes on DURING the WG fights. It's sad so many people can't do a BG without taking advantage of the mechanics. *sigh*
Honestly, all's fair in love and warcraft.
I just won't sympathize with people who play on a pvp server for longer then a year. So yeah, Durandro, it sucks. Yes, you can rant about it, but I won't insult your intelligence with pity. Whatever keeps you there, fine. Until there's a mass migration, or stagnation of the pvp servers, blizzard won't see anything that needs changing.Posted 11-02-2009 at 08:26 AM by Conreeaght

I never asked for pity. Merely understanding.
Plus you essentially agreed with me. So I don't really get your last point. I play on a PvP server because I have friends there. I just don't think that having 80's to cry to when you get ganked is anything to fall back on.Posted 11-02-2009 at 09:06 AM by Durandro

I mentioned I can agree with a rant, then I went on to rave about PvE servers. Since I was just rolling together ideas, my own stuff gets off topic, so often I wrench things back in the direction I'm going.
I'm just saying I won't insult your intelligence by pitting you for not doing something about it long ago - no matter the reason. "Because [one] has friends there" is a tired excuse. I won't get into why because I think if you mull it over in context of your complaint enough you should start to see why.Posted 11-02-2009 at 09:20 AM by Conreeaght

Not especially. Without the friends there I'd have quit that server long ago.
I overcome the ganking by playing in the small hours of the morning before people get up, or in zones that people rarely visit. And eventually I'll be high enough level to defend myself. But I'd never get there without my friends urging me on.
I'm also of the opinion that alot of people who manage to get to 80 on a PvP server are pretty darn determined, hense I'm hoping the quality of player is superior. Though of course there are going to be plenty of jerks as well, but that's true of any server.
And I'm making a real killing off the AH. Even the most mundane of things sells really well. Though I got a bit of a blow when I had to buy my enchanting rods earlier today.
But I still think there should be some kind of 'newbie protection' while leveling in a PvP server. If only to speed up my road to 80 (and yes, I have 80's on other servers).Posted 11-02-2009 at 10:37 AM by Durandro

Amen, man. I've been leveling my Warlock and I just recently hit Hellfire...
it's been a long couple of levels and I REALLY wanna get out of there and into Zangamarsh or someplace else.
I've gotten a DK through a PvP server and now my warlock is working his way through that same server. and while it wasn't horrible, there were definitely times that tested me in terms of wanting to log off the toon I'm playing, log onto an alliance alt, and chew out the inconsiderate jerk who just killed me and then took the kill I'd been waiting twenty minutes to spawn just for funsies. I know I'd just get laughed at and put on their ignore list but still...
Anyway...one bit of advice if you get frustrated with the world PvP thing: go to Outland.
dunno how it is on your server, but on mine parts of Outland are pretty much dead. When I get disgusted with PvPers and gankers and all that, I simply find a way to go to Blade's Edge, Netherstorm, somewhere around there. Do some low-level questing, just clear my head. It's not wasted at all since it gives me a chance to breathe, and it also makes me money. (easy quests plus exp converted to gold) titles like Loremaster and Seeker may be insane to get, but it's good therapy for an angry soul dealing with annoyances on a PvP realm.
Also: if you're playing a class that can breathe underwater, you're also missing a veritable wealth of space right there. Get into the water, go as deep as you can fast as you can. especially if your antagonist is distracted or something. If they loose track of you, they're not gonna search far. they're lazy. You can sit down in the depths and cool off for a bit and wait for them to leave.Posted 11-03-2009 at 05:38 AM by Tylovan

I play on a PvE server so I don't deal with that crud.
If I played on a PvP server, I would keep my best 80 in the same zone as my alt, so I can repeatedly kill whoever thought it would be funny to corpse camp me.Posted 11-03-2009 at 09:20 PM by Ferag

This thread hits a note with me. I started off on a PvP server but rerolled on a PvE because i learned i had RL friends that played WoW. Since then I have enjoyed the security of NOT getting ganked with one HUGE trade off. The imbalance that a PvE server lends to world PvP.
Quite often, people hide behind their "blue" nameplate, and will only initiate a PvP encounter when the odds are in their favor.
For example, I'll be at a summoning stone bringing in a guildy to do raid. Well if that person shows up flagged, he'll get pummled by 12 Alliance jerkwads. But if the odds were in our favor... Rest assured the Allies won't dare flag themselves.
It's typical that if you are running around flagged, two or three allies will recognize that you are alone. Then once they have aggreed to jump you. They do it. Leaving you wide open for THEIR first attack. You're essentially defenseless, and have to accept that they will open the encounter with a polymorph, or a cheap shot, or w/e will grant them an even greater advantage to the whole situation.
Atleast on a PvP server, if world PvP happens, both parties are aware of it. But I in no way find the ganking of low levels fair, and a level limit should be installed to protect these players. 10 levels is not enough.. but 15 will probably be fine.Posted 11-04-2009 at 01:07 PM by Sillybones
