Self-sacrifice as a leader.

I've found myself organising more and more PuG raids these days, often venturing into Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair. I start these runs and either lead them myself or let our guild's Raid Leader lead them (since he's better at it). Last Saturday I decided to from a Gruul run and without him ended up leading the run.
We had skilled healers, led by a shaman from my guild, good dps and three tanks. Myself, a lesser geared warrior and an equally geared paladin. We had only one other paladin in the raid, so they divided the buffs.
I was happy when we oneshot Maulgar (Warrior on Warlock, Paladin on Priest, Dranchor on Maulgar), dividing the loot without any problems and moving on to Gruul.
Then a little problem arose. The Paladin tank wanted to switch to his mage to help us out on Gruul, since he was worthless as an offtank there (his words, not mine). He silently accepted the idea that I, as the leader, would tank Gruul - which was my initial plan. However, without him we would miss 25 blessings. When I took this into account, I made the only possible responsible choice and offered him to tank Gruul, demoting myself to the offtank spot.
We had some troubles because people died to Shatters and had a 1% wipe the first time, with the Paladin dieing at 50% and me having to take over. We did good regarding the status of the raid. The second try was the same, but worse, a ninja pull caused us to leave unprepared with some of our best dps shut out, the Paladin died and I took over, wiping at 16% or so. Our third try was started in a more official, announced manner and with an extra healer and nearly no Shatter deads we killed Gruul.
The loot offered me a chance to shout out loud. Me, the owner of a Dawnforged Defender, saw the Aldori Legacy Defender. I was already congratulated over Ventrilo by my guildmates. Thus the rolls went:
OT: 20 [Yeehaw, 4/5 chance for me!]
Me: 3 [Ventrilo: Dranchoooor!]
DPS warrior: 75 [Meh.]
I of course assigned the shield to the Warrior OT (though with pain in the heart), and went on with the token division. But with all the sacrifice I made, the DPS warrior started complaining he wasn't treated rightfully. For hell's sake, of course main spec (current spec in PuG's) gets priority! I quickly told him the rule and went forth ignoring his crying.
I am proud of what I did. Not only did I again lead a successful run to Gruul's Lair, I gave people enough confidence to endure two wipes at Gruul (which, at my server, is not an everyday thing) and I gave up both my MT spot and the shield I'd love to have. I feel like it makes me a real leader, and sets me apart from the selfish. I am proud.

I agree with your decision, there has to be some kind of common sense in loot distribution, and unless the dps warrior was a tank that you asked to dps for the fight, then he definately did not deserve the shield.Posted 09-15-2008 at 08:45 AM by Tatt

That's why you specify lootrules in a pug before u start. If there was no rules then everyone there has equal rights to get something imo.Posted 09-15-2008 at 11:22 AM by Tharr

Tharr...then the rogue's and dps warrior's shouldn't have been upset if the tank or a resto shammy rolled on DST? I agree loot rules are good things, but common sense and decorum is even better.Posted 09-15-2008 at 02:08 PM by Tatt

Good leadership and if you enjoyed it then you're right for it.Posted 09-16-2008 at 12:51 AM by BoJlk

Nice sacrifice you made, but I'm confused on one thing....the person with the lowest roll gets dibs on drops? That's just how I read it from what you wrote.
'Course, it is 3:30 in the morning, and it's not like it really matters that much, anyway. I was just curious, since I've always seen it done the exact opposite.Posted 09-16-2008 at 02:31 AM by salihe

Obviously, the person with the highest roll gets a certain item. Only, when this person is rolling for offspec, I think this person shouldn't get the item. The person with the highest mainspec roll is the winner, which was in this case the offtank. That way he got what he deserved, but it was hard for me to give someone else what I had been aiming for.Posted 09-16-2008 at 10:24 AM by Dranchor

Oh, ok, that makes sense. The way you worded it in the actual blog, with your battle cry after you rolled your 3, lol, made it sound like you were happy about it. And then the whole theme of you sacrificing to your OT didn't help :PPosted 09-16-2008 at 11:22 AM by salihe

The sound was actually my guildies yelling disappointedly. I figure that wasn't easy to guess, should've clarified it.Posted 09-18-2008 at 10:35 AM by Dranchor
