Malygos is Going to Nuke my Raid

So we're going to make our first Malygos attempt this week. We were going to do it last week, but we want our very best for the first time and too many people were having schedule conflicts. I'm not worried about my tanking, and for good measure I'll be particularly cheery and confident in the Naxx raid the night before Maly. I'm not worried about the healers - they're competent and always focused. I'm not worried about the DPS, as we are taking our most solid people. The raid leader is knowledgeable and prepares well, and when it's serious business time you won't hear a peep over vent.
So what the hell am I worried about? Phase three.
Although a very cool idea, and a great feature (I guess), this is something I fear will be a regular addition to raid encounters to "spice them up." NO! Bad Blizzard! Stop it! Let my raiders use the abilities their characters have hotkeyed that they know and love. This wrench you are throwing into the works is not cool by me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Aces High daily in Coldarra until I found out that it was Malygos practice. It was one of the only dailies I actually did every day, now it's like a coin toss as to whether I am able to finish it cleanly... I see that stupid parachute far more often than I ever did before. The worst part? After I posted on our guild forum that Aces High was Malygos practice and it was pretty much using the exact drake we were going to control in the encounter, my performance got even worse.
I was chatting with my raid leader earlier, and even he said that he finding Aces High to be unusually difficult. So here is my "oh crap" and "WTF" moment so I stay cool within the guild in the events leading up to Maly.
Did anyone else notice personal or guild-wide failings on Aces High leading up to Malygos as some weird first time jitters? ...Or is Malygos really about to nuke my raid all night? Slash cry.

Don't worry about p3 too much, first get p1 under good control. There will be your basis for the kill.
You will probably have enough shitty p1s where it looked like a succes but it wasn't because you lost too much time to beat his enrage timer. All these times you will get to p3 and can practice a lot.
What helps is if the ones doing the healing drakes on p3 have raidframes enabled for raid pets. This way your dps-ers can just dps and the healers time their aoe heal instead of spamming it.Posted 02-04-2009 at 04:56 AM by orcstar

A helpful thing for the DPSers is the "malygos addon" addon. It helps keep track of stack counts during phase 3. Should take some of the jitters off as it helps moniter and should increase DPS.
My best suggestion? Have your healers keep healing, and be the flex guy yerself. If you notice people hurting, pop off an AoE heal. Your a tank, use your reactive nature to your raids advantage.
Personally, I find phase 3 very frustrating, because I can't save or control maly's damage, and the DPS has to save themselves with moving/flameshield. I've found it more troublesome than the rest of the fight.
My advice? Get first phase down ASAP. Soon as you have 2, maybe even 1 spark on yer DPS, burn hero right after a vortex. Make sure yer dk has the target spark macro to pull em in quickly, and I've found a Spriest with mindflay helps to slow the ones down that are creeping toward maly.
Phase 2. The imp spell reflect is helpful, albeit not nessisary, if yer a warrior tank. It not only prevents damage, but is the only way as a melee your going to be able to do DPS to the guys up top, until you get a disk. You'll be the last melee to get a disk, as a tank your single target DPS is probably mute.
Phase one is a burn phase, just focus hard and blow them CD's ASAP. hero, trinkets, etc for all yer DPS.
Phase 2 is where yer gonna feel like yer wasting time. Make sure you ranged is DPSing their heiny's off, and use the sparks from phase one as long as possible. Make sure ranged is targeting anything that is in the air, hell even mark one with a skull to see if they can focus fire one down.
Get yer highest DPS melee in the air first, usually a rogue or yer DK, yer warrior might have rage issues in the air. Also remember, them guys in the air are stunnable, so tell your DPS that, as it reduces damage.
Tell your healers to throw a moonfire, a judgement, a penance, a mind blast (even if holy), at mobs in the air. Mana is useless in phase 3, so use it all.
Time time time is yer issue. Phase one is gonna want to be way faster than you think it needs to be. Phase 2 is the slow phase.
Give yerself good time, and phase 3 can be off, even losing people. Personally, our first time it came down to 2 DPSing drakes and 1 guy healing, and maly hit his enrage. The healing got off 2 good AoE's quickly and one of our DPS had 26 stacks on maly, he poped his flame shield and maly and him died at the same time.
You'll get it. Just practice ^_^
Forgive my spelling errors, it's very late and I'ma horrible speller.Posted 02-04-2009 at 05:37 AM by Glomgore

I can't even get past the 1st phase with my guild, but then again I have only fought him twice myself and we have had the key for about a month now yet we have only fought him a handful of times in general.Posted 02-04-2009 at 10:28 AM by Rennadrel

i wouldn't worry to much about the theme of phase 3 reoccuring in other fights in upcoming content. I think one of the reasons we have phase 3 in this fight is the lore behind the battle with malygos. If your interested you can read up on it on wowwiki or somewhere, but for a 10 or 25 man group of mortals to kill one of the aspects would just be ludicrous, technically you guys just weaken him and the red dragon flight gets all the credit :]Posted 02-05-2009 at 12:03 PM by Erichilles
