Living Alone Sucks
Posted 03-04-2008 at 08:53 PM by Ciderhelm
I've lived alone for over two years. I hate it. People don't understand why I say this, so I'll explain:
It's the wind that freaks me out. Storms and wind are common here. I love the sound... until I start hearing creaking. In a two story house with three entrances, it's more than enough.
Rationally, there's just about nothing that actually poses a threat to me. Still, companionship has it's purposes.
Maybe I'll get a dog.
- Medical Emergency: What if something happens to me and I can't get help?
- Burglary: What if someone breaks into my home while I'm asleep?
- Creepy Sounding Furnace: Really creepy.

| | Yeah. In a more perfect world. I'll see if I don't have an update on the women situation in the next few months. |

| | I've always had roommates. And while we may not have spent that much time interacting due to me with wow/work, and them with school, it was just a huge comfort to know that they were in the next room. |

| | As a child my grandparent's house used to creep me out at night. I'd get into trouble sleeping with the flashlight on. They had a tin roof with 3 huge oak trees on one side touching the roof, when the wind would blow I'd imagine someone was walking on top of the roof, waiting to come in the window. I would recommend getting a sound spa at any local store (Target, a drugstore). I used to sleep in a basement and the furnace was right outside the door, the noise from the 'crickets' used to help me get to sleep, there's also rain, a creak, the ocean. In the past I did not want guns in my house. That changed after a couple of punks broke into our garage one night, then came back the next day to bust in our front door (they didn't make it in). We weren't home at the time, but I just kept thinking...but what if we had been? Our house was kind of hard to find, so I called the local cop shop to make sure they knew where we were. Turns out our house address is part of their orientation to the job. I also got more familiar with handling our shotgun. My father said shotguns are nice because you just point in the general direction and shoot, that and the noise of cocking the hammer might scare them off. Our dog is a timid creature, I don't know that she'd scare anyone. I think she would alert us if someone was there though, but she doesn't bark, get a dog that barks, not a yapper. I worry more now that someone will try to kidnap my daughter. That is my biggest fear when I'm out and about with her or home at night, that someone will break in and try to take her. Horacio recommended I put bushes and bear traps outside her window .My mom lives alone, she hates it too. I think over the next couple years I will have to help her move closer to us. She lives on the other side of the state. She drives me crazy but I know she worries about all the same things you do. I need to call her today . Could you get a roommate? |

| | Heh... you know, this is an interesting read. I currently live with my parents, and have considered moving out. I get tired of being told things to do that I have planned to do, but I have to do them now. Not 15 minutes from now, when I finish my current train of thought, but now. And they wonder why I'm so scatterbrained! There's also the issue of the dogs. Now, I've grown up with dogs, and I do love dogs. However, due to her divorce, my sister moved back in the house with her 3 dogs (we had 2). So, now we have 5 dogs, and my sister's dogs are crazy. Trying to sleep with dogs barking all the time is annoying. People hear the dogs barking all the time over vent (it's how they know I'm talking), and it's just downright annoying. Then I consider the option of living alone... while I get peace and quiet.. is it too much peace and quiet? And yeah, I don't really get out much... so I don't really have any options for roommates. |

| | Ya, I've had roommates most of my life. I find that the few times I haven't I've enjoyed it for a while, but eventually craved more human interaction. So I definitely empathize with ya, best of luck with the ladies! ![]() |

| | I think you should get a cat. They are very good at distinguishing normal house noises from anything else odd (even things you cannot hear), so if the cat is sleeping next to you, you are safe. They don't need taking outside in the dark either. Two kittens would be best, because watching them play rocks, and if you spend some time out then they have a friend for company. Also, you should try okcupid.com (free). I never met anyone from it, but might have if things turned out differently. At worst you could entertain us with stories of scary blind dates. |

| | Get an alarm system. Seriously, if anything terrible happens, such as a break in, or a fire help is on the way whether you call anyone or not. Any decent alarm system has a battery back up for when the power goes out (or gets shut off). The better systems have radio back up in case someone cuts the phone lines to your house. It's a wonderful peace of mind investment. Can't suggest much for you for the wind and the furnace noises. I like old houses with personality (aka lots of odd sounds), but that's not for everyone. The sound machine idea was a pretty good thought, though. And if you did decided you wanted someone there with you, I'd suggest joining a church and look for a fellow gamer/geek to woo. It's certainly worked well for me. (15 years and counting) |

| | I love my alone time, especially when I'm home. But I despise being home alone. Like everyone's suggested, roommates work wonders. You don't have any close friends unmarried? And at the dating advice jokes- I think everyone here has too much respect for Cider to make the typical "lol get a life and get laid" comments that you'll hear from the less coherent people on normal forums. Internet anonymity syndrome, gotta love it. |
