I'm talkin' downtown!
The Death Knight Experience Is Over

3 days, 4 hours, some odd minutes. I dinged 80 sometime Sunday around supper. The Death Knight leveling experience was great. I leveled as Blood which has so much self healing that I had virtually no downtime. I solo'd every single group quest up to 80 that I came across (except the Overlord in HFP) without much difficulty.
Then I hit 80 and started doing dungeons with the other 80 DK from the guild. I don't have the gear to tank currently so I've been working on that. One thing I've noticed is how incredibly irritating other Death Knights are to group with. Aside from the fact that they also roll on your loot, they seem to think Death Grip is the be all end all solution to everything, and it's okay to drop DnD before the tank gets to the group and pull aggro because "that's what Icebound Fortitude" is for. Just because you can write your name in the snow, doesn't mean you should be doing it every 5 minutes. So the DK novelty has started to wear off already.
Then I started looking at tanking from a practical stand point and that's when the novelty really started to wear off. The rotations are very restrictive compared to the new warrior rotations which are much more reactionary and fun to play. If you mess up your warrior rotation, it's easy to just wait a second and resume. If you mess up your DK rotation, you pretty much have to wait 10 seconds for the runes to reset to get back into a proper groove. There's also a lot of utility they don't have that a warrior does have, and the big one for me is a warrior to apply sunders for the raid.
And let's not forget glorious 3.0. Right up until then I was prepared to main switch. When 3.0 hit and I started tanking with the new changes it was like falling in love all over again with my warrior.
So the name in the snow thing, 3.0 changes, and all the comparisons to my warrior just made me madder than a yak in heat. And that's when I made an official decision last night to go back to my warrior full time.
Ding. Welcome to Borean Tundra and level 71. /crytime At least work is slow right now, so it shouldn't be more than a week for me to cap.

I haven't done too much in the way of tanking yet, but I've enjoyed what I had. I don't group with other DK's for that reason though. They're going to make you run level 80 instances like you ran your alts through SFK - like retards. You can get away with it, but you're not learning how to be an endgame tank in the end.
I can see, though, that a rotation screwup can make things go bonkers (and your threat to be low), but we'll see how it scales. There's a lot of people that have said that DK threat doesn't scale as well as the others, and I'm wondering if it's because of difficult-to-maintain rotations.
I also never thought I'd be saying this, but I also like the look of my DK better. Probably because I'm a single guy.
"Madder than a yak in heat"... that's a new one.Posted 11-19-2008 at 08:35 AM by ttocs

I like my DK look better also because it's a male draenai and he's huge. If I was hordeside, I'd be a Tauren for sure. But I'm one of the rare few I believe. >_> That aside, yeah, the other guy just really put me off the class and reminded me why I loved my warrior more in the first place. Not only that, I was already leaning towards my warrior when 3.0 hit, I was just crazy and decided to level DK first for some reason.Posted 11-19-2008 at 09:11 AM by Caulle

Well, if anything, leaving your warrior and then going back to her makes you appreciate it even more.
I'm not a big fan of male draenei. Though I don't mind tauren as much. I was an undead through BC, and looked terrible, especially in plate.
Yeah, I'm a female belf. Sue me. If anything, it'll make people target me in BG's/world pvp because they tend to equate 'blood elf' = 'bad'.
Speaking of world PvP. You know what sucks about being one of the highest level DK's on a pvp server? Not just the "lol u have no lief", but...
You die.

Being the new, cool thing, the DK class is attracting all kinds. I seem to be doomed to running into all the asshats. I suspect you are in a small minority of people who looked at the class, put some thought into it and examined the skills and talents. Most of em are out there blundering across the landscape like fools.
As far as tanking goes, its hard for me to say. I'll be a tard and run Utgarde with two other warrior tank buddies just for kicks and grins but in general, I'm the tank if I'm there. I ran Old Kingdom with a DK last night and never had aggro issues with them though I probably should have told them to push me a little. As it was, the rogue smoked the DK on the damage meter but he's the best DPSer I know and how many DKs really know WTF they're doing at this point?
/shrug. I camped a DK name and started playing my warrior. I do JC dailys on my druid but I am back to full time on my warrior and nothing beats it.Posted 11-19-2008 at 09:27 AM by Horacio

We are going with a DK tank in our 25 man and he's level 73 last I checked. Rerolled from a feral druid. We'll have a warrior MT, me, a tankadin and the DK. No ferals, which concerns me some but they seem to slowly be dying off aside from the "I'm feral DPS, I R cat 4 fite" types who don't know what tanking gear is.Posted 11-19-2008 at 09:55 AM by Horacio

Sad to hear that DK tanking doesn't boast the utility that Warriors have. I definitely don't like the idea that if you screw up your rotation that it'll take 10 seconds to get back on track again. (although this should lead to interesting guides on how to recover from a mistake in your rotation)
That being said, I'm lovin' my Warrior too right now and even though visually we didn't get anything amazing like others... it's fantastic to play right now. I definitely think you made the right call coming back to team Warrior

We still have pretty much the same tanking corps as TBC, but it's a lot more diverse now. The main Feral is staying feral. The other feral re-rolled a paladin over the summer and enjoyed it so much he wanted to stay as a paladin for BC. The other warrior is currently working on his DK, and I'm staying on my warrior. So we've pretty much got one of each which should work well.Posted 11-19-2008 at 10:25 AM by Caulle

I ran Utgarde with an unholy dps'ing dk....laughed at myself for 10 seconds when I started running around like crazy when he did the circle of claws out of the ground thingie....old habits "Get out of the f'ing fire" kicked in till I realized the circle was a good thing

You could go Unholy for the target de-buff. Ebon Plague I believe. I love Unholy tankingQuote:and the big one for me is a warrior to apply sunders for the raid.

No where near the same as sunders. Ebon Plaguebringer is a Magical DPS increase. Factoring they upped the armour values on all raid bosses, Sunders are a must. Plus, the other DK is unholy so he has that covered.Quote:You could go Unholy for the target de-buff. Ebon Plague I believe. I love Unholy tankingPosted 11-19-2008 at 12:21 PM by Caulle

I wasn't ever planning on re-rolling, but it's very interesting to read your perspective. Warrior tanking right now is fun, even questing is fun which says a lot coming from someone who hates doing it. How did you manage to hit 80 already btw?Posted 11-19-2008 at 04:13 PM by kolben

I am pretty much where Kolben is...the DK was not really on my radar. I have a prot warrior that is just fantastic fun right now...an arcane mage - 72 and chompin at the bit...and a resto druid languishing at 70. I figured there was just not going to be enough time to seriously invest in yet another one.
My wife, however, did roll a DK and raved about how great it was. I noticed, however, that the last two nights she has spent every available minute on her boomkin.Posted 11-20-2008 at 04:51 PM by csmgt
