Flash based IRC client. I've seen it work before, and we honestly don't need to know when posts are made.

hey hey, the posts helped me keep things modded, but i guess if it was bogging down the system that should be removed. however, i think it was more than just that eating up resources. It was the shoutbox client in general. I like the idea of a jIRC client or something but we have to look it up and make sure its safe to use first. And make sure it runs using 8080 protocol so us work folk can use it. If it uses just IRC protocols, most work places will have that port blocked.

Mabye setup some type of auto-proxy through tankspot's servers? Could add a bit of strain, but nothing huge, methinks.

Is there anything we can do that does not involve our server? I really don't understand IRC, but is there someone who can host that, and we simply provide a portal towards it?

Miss it already.

I don't know jack about IRC either, so I can't help much there. >_<

We could use any IRC network, all you have to do is connect to a server, register your user/pass and create a channel. Eskimo rings a bell as one that was good back in the day, from what I know they're still around?

For providing "portal" access, you'd just have a java or flash based IRC client on the chat page.

The main IRC channel I've been using recently is hosted on irc.partyvan.fm, have yet to have any trouble.

Somehow I feel Cider might not want to associate Tankspot with a server called 'partyvan'.

So I got tired of no shoutbox and set up a channel on dalnet just to check interest and possibly let Cider get a feel for IRC before he decides if it's a good idea or not.

To access it:
Download an IRC client such as mIRC, which can be found for free at www.mirc.com
mIRC will have a list of servers you can connect to in it's settings. Select a DALnet one closest to you. If this puzzles anyone I can provide more technical ways of connecting.
Type /join #TankSpot

You should be in the channel. From here if this actually starts to take off you may wish to register your nickname so no one can steal it. /nickserv HELP will show you how to do that.

I'll idle the channel for a couple days to see if anyone even has any interest.

Ew, Dalnet. >_<

I'll fire up an IRC client w/o DCC when I get home I guess.

I, too, have bad memories of DALnet from like 15 years ago when I was new to the internet and it was always split wide open. However it seems to have lived the whole time and prospered.

I was going to use something like Quakenet or Gamesurge but it turns out that most major IRC networks require you to sign up through their websites to register your account. I figured that would just make things more complicated for the user base here since apparently most Tankspotters don't have oldschool IRC experiences. I wanted to keep it simple.

PS: No one has joined yet =P

You could've said something in a more public place.

That said, I apparently need to come up with a good, solid article of some sort to get access to the shoutbox returned. boo inability to donate.

Yea, I didn't want to make a blog just for it, and I don't want to make a post about it until Cider decides he wants to support it. This is his site and all.
