Woe to you, MA, how we have forgotten thee

Interesting thought about the role of an OT, with the question of what do you do when not tanking...

... who here remembers the role of Main Assist? generally, that was an OT back in the day, in the groups I ran with.

What kind of raid boss could necessitate the OT take the role of main assist? well, let's see. A hunter mob that summons waves of pets and hunter's marks the main tank so that the pets have no aggro table. Oh, yeah, they're hunter pets, they ignore AoE. The main tank tanks it all whether he wants to or not, the OT's job is to pick one, mark it, taunt it and do his best to keep the bugger off the MT as the MT takes an assload of damage.

Hmm. there's one, but it's a gimmick design.

Mount hyjal is a good example, but that's trash, not a boss.

Speaking of hunter's marks. Can we please get taunt to put a "recently taunted: immune to the effects of npc hunter's mark targeting effects" buff? Sunfury handlers of botanica, I'm looking at YOU and your damned dirty dragonhawks. Amani'shi huntards and your damned dirty crocolisks and lynxes, too!

As a raid leader, I always used a rogue as a main assist both before and after BC. Probably mostly because he's a good friend, a smart player and knows the game very well. He makes targeting and raid warning macros and looks for split DPS and over aggro.

I think the lucky charms lessened the impact of a solid MA to an extent. You put in marks, give out a kill order and there's not much else for people to do but go to the next charm.

I still like to use them, however because it gives another player some authority over the action, a form of delegation and if you trust them, they can help with changes in the action and dealing with situations requiring adaptation.

Agreed, anyone remember garr? "assist me for your target". The role of a main assist back then was to assist train (or focus fire for TBC nubs). It was usually a dps class since they were less prone to switch targets.

With lucky charms it's not as useful anymore. The power of an assist train was so awesome on ragnaros adds
