Tinkering!

I've spent just about the whole Monday evening redesigning my user interface. Allright allright… Perhaps redesign isn't exactly the right word for what I did, but tweaking sounds like too little. I've been wanting to try out this viewport thing for quite a while now, so I decided to finally do the time and sit down to tinkering. Now my avatar might be an engineer, personally I find the process of setting up add ons a rather frustrating one. The goals were to get Grid working and to see if I liked the viewport thing.
For those that haven't followed my exploits. I've been working on my UI off and on over the last year (basically ever since I started tanking in earnest). In fact - I'm most likely to preach to the choir here if I say that a good, clean UI is one of the things that can help you most with doing your job properly.
Either way, in the 2 hours I spent getting my things right (basically I fiddle with the most likely buttons till I see stuff moving the way I like it!) my main point of frustration became Grid. I am used to setting up Pitbull - and one of the main good things is that you're able to go into 'raid' mode and set things up exactly like you would if you were in a full raid group. What followed was me joining several battlegrounds just to see how debuffs showed and to get the layout correctly. Obviously, murphy's law applied and the alliance subsequently lost any battleground with 25 or more players within about 1 minute. It took quite a bit of time in Alterac Valley to get things set up nicely. And hey, guess what; when I showed up yesterday evening for the last raid before the reset Grid refused to show itself alltogether. (it got sorted though but it was quite stressfull)
What I'm not (entirely) happy with at the moment.
The placement of my bigwigs timers (easily sorteable)
Need a good way to keep track on what the hell happened (in that second where I got instagibbed)
The placement of the maintank windows
Utterly failing at setting up a working whitelist for Satrina's Buff Frames (oh, I am such a noob!)
I'll upload a picture if I can get home from work early, if not I'll be instantly ninja'd to 10 man hardmodes so I don't think I'll have much time to do that…
In other news...
Heroic Northrend Beasts (25 man) had me grinding my teeth. In about 10-12 tries I've been insta gibbed around 4-5 times. Now I'm running the encounter with 51.8k health buffed and it is starting to get really annoying, since there's hardly anything I can do to get more health somewhere. Somehow the damn thing felt like running up and banging your head against a brick wall. We've worked hard on stabilizing the DPS and currently it really is _just_ enough to get a smooth phase 1 to phase 2 transition in. We're running the encounter with 3 tanks which gives us a floater tank that can either run with the bile in phase one - or take over from a poisoned tank in phase 2. It's playing it safe but hey, that's what we usually need to get a kill in. Now if there was a way to eliminate the RNG…
Ah well!

Try Acheron for "what just killed me" type of thing. It can be made to show what heals, buffs, debuffs and incoming damage you took over the last upto 60 seconds before your death.Posted 10-28-2009 at 07:46 AM by onimarishu

Oh no, I've been meaning to convert to grid from pitbull due to everyone telling me it shows debuffs so nicely ...
Re:SBF - just have it installed and active for a raid and it will pick up the buffs and debuffs, then start to sort out which ones you want showing - using whitelist or blacklist (depending on if you want everything but X and Y or just X and Y), it took me a while, but once you've got one "group of buffs" how you want the rest are really easy.Posted 10-28-2009 at 08:28 AM by Shortypop

I always look forward to seeing UIs that aren't in a gigantic, impossible to read thread. Hopefully it will give me inspiration to further my own UI.Posted 10-28-2009 at 12:53 PM by Ferag
