Steak and Ale pie braising steak carrots onions Stout (dark beer, something like guiness or similar) Fry the meat till browned all over move to an oven proof pan Fry onions and carrots until browned (not burnt) add to meat. turn on heat under 2nd pan, add a heaped tablespoon of flour, stir well when it goes gooey (the gluten comes out of the flour) add 400 ml of the beer bring to boil, cover with foil and pan lid, cook in preheated oven at 125°C for 3-4 hours. The meat is done when it falls apart when poked with a wooden spoon remove from the pan, place in a dish retain some liquid for gravy cover with pastry (shop bought puff pastry works if you can't be bothered making your own) bake for 15 minutes at 180°C or until pastry is golden brown. Gravy: Mix a tablespoon of cornflour in a cup with a little cold water and add the other 100 ml of beer. stir well. add to left over sauce from the pie mix. bring to boil, then simmer until thickened. serve with mashed potatoes or chips.
