View Full Version : Tanking Why is this Tankadin doing higher dps than me on Cho'gall?

Hey guys - my first post on Tankspot :)

This other Paladin tank gets in more hits than me on just about all abilities and each ability does more damage on average per hit.

I've spent a lot of time analyzing the logs and I just cannot figure it out.

Here is the log of the other tankadin (Glady) - from their Cho'gall kill:
http://worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-qj856fs7j5h2i9wx/sum/damageDone/?s=10838&e=11271

Here is my log from our Cho'gall attempt:
http://worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-v2dwqzuldt3l68ly/sum/damageDone/?s=10434&e=10916

As you can see, I am doing 6831 DPS(e), Glady is doing 9400 DPS(e).

Glady has a bit better gear than me, but we have almost exactly the same melee stats - the biggest difference is that I have 3% more Hit Rating.

Here is Gladys armory profile:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/twisting-nether/glady/advanced

Here is my armory profile:
http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/dunemaul/volari/advanced

Now, I have discovered one thing from analyzing the logs. We don't have the +10% melee haste buff because our Shaman used the wrong totem (should have used Windfury totem).

That would explain, perhaps, why Glady is getting in more attacks than me in the same amount of time.

However, it doesn't explain why Glady is doing more damage per hit, on average, for just about all his various attacks.

For example:

Glady does 10979 average damage on Crusader Strike - I do 9147
Glady does 21127 average Crusader Strike crit - I do only 16714

Glady does 19185 average Shield of the Righteous - I do 12875
Glady does 35204 average Shield of the Righteous crit - I do 30571

Glady does 3527 average melee hits - I do 2882
Glady does 7377 average melee crits - I do 6217

...and so on and so forth.

Why is this??
Can you guys figure out why from the logs or our gear/spec setup?
Are we missing some raid buff, perhaps?

Any explanation for this would be greatly appreciated!

I looked at your toons, first. I don't see how you can say that you have more or less equal gear. You definitly don't do.

Gladys has reforged for survivel, you switched away from it to hit and expertise (and even overcap hit).

However the thing that helps you much more than hit or expertise for threat/dmg as a tank is Vengeance. As more dmg you take as higher your Vengeance will stack and as more AP will you get and as heavier your abilies will hit. It looks like this is the case. He has eaten much more dmg than you. So his Vengeance will probably have been higher than yours.

Well and the sunder armor debuff was up for him all the time while yours only was up 60% of the time. Your rogue did not apply it at all, your hunters probably had no pets to apply it and your druid did not hold it up well. While in Gladys case both, the warrior and the druid had it on the boss nearly 100% of the time.

I think that there is much more going on like this, don't want to look for everything, his group did correctly and you or yours didn't do.

In a nut shell: He is tanking the adherents. His vengeance is not dropping as low as yours as he does not have a down-time. Therefore he does more damage.

Heya Katzazi and thanks for your response!

When I meant more or less equal gear, I meant in regards to melee stats - dps, damage, crit rating etc.

Glady has much more Mastery and more armor while I have reforged away Parry/Dodge for Hit Rating.

That should really mean that I would take more damage than Glady and thus gain more Vengeance. Glady has 52% block while I have 38%.

Glady took 7244 DPS(e) damage in the fight, I took 5.9k DPS(e). Remember, though, that they actually killed Cho and went through that last phase probably taking a good bit more damage then me.

However, our fight lasted almost a minute longer than theirs so it would seem I did take generally less damage than Glady - which is a bit strange since my gear and configuration would indicate I should take more. Perhaps I used my defensive cooldowns more efficiently.

Perhaps Vengeance is the explanation...

Does this mean we should actually TRY to take lots of damage in order to do more dps? Stack loads of Stamina and less avoidance?

I mean - 2600 more dps is not insignificant...

Glady is tanking something for the entire fight, you are only tanking for about 50% of the fight. Of course he is going to take more damage :)

Ah yes, that must be it!
Noone was hitting me while the other tank was tanking Cho so my Vengeance didn't continue to rise.

Do you know how long it takes before the Vengeance stacks drop off?

About 10 seconds depending on what is happening.

Thanks Pyrea - learn something new even after tanking for several years :)

To be fair, we have only had vengeance for several MONTHS :D

Yes, but since it changes tank dmg dramatically all the time, it's the first thing to think about when comparing tank dps...

Yes, I'll definitely be more aware of this from now on!
