Good day,
to start off I sincerely apologize if this subject has been treated with great care somewhere else on this forum, I honestly tried to find a topic discussing this but I didn't really find what I was looking for.
My question is actually quite simple, what professions are valid options for PvE these days?
I currently have both mining and skinning maxed out. It is quite obvious that skinning has to go. Mining, on the other hand, seems mysteriously on par with some of the other professions.
Now, what I was wondering, what profession should I pick up to replace skinning, and should I replace mining at all? From what I've been seeing, BS is quite a valid option. How do the other ones fare? I am trying to limit my gold expenses as much as I can, but I understand that professions are the biggest gold sink I'll encounter probably, so I don't mind spending what I have.

Here is my armory link with my current gear, but I am aware of several flaws in my current gear, enchant/gem wise and all.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I've gone with jewel crafting and blacksmithing.

Jc provides access to the upper tier gems ( +101 strength, + 67 mastery ) that are worthwhile.

Blacksmith provides additional sockets on gear, plus I've found that all the gear you make can provide a decent roi from the mats you buy lvling.

Others have engineering because you get something for the bracers and the optic kill shades.

Yes, I'm leaning towards JC + BS to be honest.. I've just done a spreadsheet, BS will cost me roughly 12700g, if I mine nothing myself and without selling the items I get from it. Gives me another decision, spend gold or mine myself.. But that's not something for this forum.

BS should be one of the cheapest professions because you only need a skill of 400 to get the benefits. You can easily fly around nowadays with 451% riding speed and farm those in a day. I spend ~ two while riding on a ground mount and using gryphons back in Wrath while dumping Herb for BS.

Just checked a guide, might be outdated thanks to Cata profession changes (more ups for tougher recipes) and the recent guild perk (+10% tradeskill ups):

280 x [Copper Bar] (http://www.wowhead.com/item=2770)

Wow thanks, I didn't think of that you only have to level until 400! With the list I had, 1-400 costs 7000g (taking the top amounts), your list brings that down to 6500.

If you want to stack Mastery, then JC and BS are the best. But don't discount Alchemy, http://www.wowhead.com/item=58483 is a strong contender for a trinket slot and you can mix and match elixirs for mitigation rather than simply use a stam flask (http://www.wowhead.com/item=58148 paired with http://www.wowhead.com/item=58093 or http://www.wowhead.com/item=58143). Alchemy is also extremely cheap to level up, it cost me maybe 2-3k on my old server.

I would steer clear of Engineering, in any case. The helm is a quite nice starter piece, but http://www.wowhead.com/spell=82177 fall flat compared to the other tank bonuses. I only use it because it's the most convenient profession (Jeeves is awesome).

I'm an Alchemy/engineer right now. Love it. Alchemy benefits are obvious.

Engineering, I get:

1500 extra armor with a 20% uptime. It's good, but not great.

Goggles, with exactly the stats I want them to have. I can even cheaply switch out a hut cogwheel for my dodge cogwheel to pick up 200 ish hit if I'm on interrupt duty for a fight or something, then switch back after.

Rocket boosts, which are fantastic forkiting things around, like the adds on Maloriak, or the fire on Atramedes air phase. Also great for running back after wipes.

Jeeves, buff said.

Portable mailbox.

Teleporter to Northrend or any of the goblin towns.

An additional means of ranged pulling which is also an interrupt.

Parachute cloak, for the nasty elevator boss in Blackwing Descent.

Probably a few other things I'm missing. Now, maybe all of those together are not quite as strong as, say, blacksmithing, but they're a lot more fun and on demand usable than blacksmithing, which is just a boring passive.

Thanks for all the input! I'll be going BS, just still having some doubts about what to replace mining with. Kind of drawn between Alch, Engi and JC.

I've chosen Leatherworking and JC

It's just hard to go past that bracer enchant seeing as the normal ones are sub par for tanking.

JC for a bit of money and the JC gems.
