Hey gang,

I'm looking for ideas for a Tank spec with DPS in mind. I've retired from ICC25 and joined a PvP guild: they need some help with rep and a few gear pieces and a mild interest in some PvE which I'm happy to help them with, and they've asked me to tank for them since my gear is ready for ICC25 heroic, and they're just starting ICC10 normal.

Seeing as I'm overgeared for the content, I was hoping to swap my spec around for a more damage-focused one. I intend to tank with Deathbringer's Will, and I've swapped my 277 rep ring to a DPS one for PvP, so I'll be using this as well. My defense is fine, and I'm sure that the stamina loss I'm suffering from the trinket won't be noticable to the healers.

So: is what I'm doing stupid? Should I just continue to focus on maximum tanking statistics and spec? Or can I have some fun with this and make the low-end DPS sweat? What spec would YOU suggest for this, and why?

well, if youre geard for 25 icc herouic, than yea, but as long as you have what you need to stay alive, but other than that, go with a 2nd spec form the traner.

Swap out some tank pieces for DPS pieces, while staying def capped. It's not just the survival, but the fact that if you have done ICC25 heroic, you probably have the requisite skills to tank ICC10 normal in your sleep. I think Kaze mentioned which pieces he swapped out, I think it was like neck, rings, trinkets, I'm guessing you might have some 264 dps pieces from your travels. Equip a slow 1h DPS weapon, Titanium Plating on the shield.

As for spec, the standard 15/3/53 should still work, unless somebody want to comment on the old UA spec (but I think that is dead).

Or try playing around with this, 2 points left for you to fill out.

Great tips, thanks, but what about the spec specifically?

See edit. Also, post armory? Just curious to see what's available to work with.

Standard utility spec making use of deep wounds and impale as well as imp disciplines would max your dps.

I'll log out in my gear I use to tank ICC trash in. With a normal deep wounds spec and this gear, I usually sustain about 15-18k (maybe up to 20k with the 30% buff) on marrowgar trash. Glyphs are cleaving/shockwave/blockingORdevastate. My spec atm has 2/2 imp disciplines, but for max dps you should probably go 2/5 cruelty with those 2 floater points. Doubt you'll have exactly the same pieces I do to use while tanking, but if you don't you'll at least get an idea what stats to go for. Only thing you can't see on the armory is block value. I usually try and get 2100-2300. Btw, I have horrendous luck with trying to replace my dps trinkets. You prolly don't wanna use the ones I do, lol. Oh, and use the 3% crit meta obviously.

Edit: The gems in my gear are probably not optimal for this type of tanking. Most of that gear is gemmed as part of my fury or arms pvp setup. If I were gemming strictly for tank dps/tps, I'm not sure if arp would be the way to go. I think crit actually helps out a lot more while aoe tanking, but I'm not positive. I've never actually tested it.

Imp. Cleave will give me more DPS than Deep Wounds?

I LOVE it! How much DPS gear do you think you'll be able to keep on during marrowgar 10 normal?

I have all of the stuff you've got on, except for the shield, neck, and I use castlebreaker's for PvP. My luck with shields has been just as bad as your luck with trinkets... I have seen it drop ZERO times.

I run basically the exact same spec... I didn't want to tell anyone, since I feared they'd tell me 'yours is fine.'

When you said maximize DPS you never mentioned trash. Cleave won't do jack for you on bosses as, if I'm not mistaken it's less damage and more rage than heroic strike. And for trash you are only using it as a rage dump, your ss/rev/dev coupled with shockwave and tclap are your main threat abilities.

This is almost completely dependent on your healers. I just swap gear around each week/fight until I find the sweet spot, heh. I've seen some tanks just wear all-out dps gear on some of these icc bosses recently, and they even take a few crits per fight on some of them. I don't like doing that, even if it does mean more dps for me. Part of the fun is tweaking my setup so that I can push out the dps while still staying uncrittable and somewhat durable.

I use a completely different gear set for bosses. I can log out in that setup later today if you want. I'm unsure of the exact stats offhand, but it's obviously hit and expertise hardcapped (i think 235hit and 58 expertise, with food), ~20% crit, 2000ish block value, 5200ish ap, 30ish% arp. 2p dps and 2p tank t10 as well. I use the ilv 284 heroic mace off LK25 heroic for bosses usually, except for when I'm offtanking festergut. I'd probably wear a slow weapon full-time on most single-target boss fights if I had a 284 slow weapon tho.

My records are like 8k on marrowgar, 13k on festergut, 9-10k rotface, 8k saurfang. Those are 25man numbers, but they are just as high or higher for 10man if I have all the buffs I need. I don't always do this on bosses anymore though, cause once I get a number/rank (on wol) I'm happy with I just start wearing survival gear instead and I try to see how little dmg I can take from the bosses instead. I prolly only push the dps on bosses every 2nd or 3rd week now. Now that 30% is out, a lot of my records have prolly been beaten tho and I'll have to try and beat my old personal bests. Gotta keep things interesting . :x
