I really love Black Rock Mountain. Even to this day, I still find it the richest, most interesting, most impressive place in WoW to lose myself in exploring. I think the Grim Guzzler has alot to do with that, but so does the lore, the civil war within it, the cavernous vastness of the place, etc.

However, the only MMO I've ever played is WoW. What other dungeons (edit: or raids) in other games are comparable or better than BRM?

Deadmines.

No seriously, who among you when running it for the first time was not completely floored and blown away when you get to the final chamber, and there's a ever-loving pirate ship there?

talking dungeons, not raids....hmm....I'd have to go with...Dead Side Strat :)

I was.

Back when the game had just come out and everyone was a noob, Deadmines also was a real challenge. You were never sure if your group would even clear the whole place, so altogether it felt really epic.

Not... shoot me now lol.

Deadmines.

No seriously, who among you when running it for the first time was not completely floored and blown away when you get to the final chamber, and there's a ever-loving pirate ship there?I have always been a horde player until recently i just faction changed to play with my cousin and his wife as a way to "visit" with my family while being away in the military. plus i want to be a worgen as soon as they let you race change to that because werewolves are awesome. So anyway I never did deadmines much.

I always was fond of shadowfang keep. I like werewolves.

I kind of liked RFD because of the zombie pigs and stuff and I liked how at the time it had a fast ass escort quest in it instead of the painfully slow ones people were used to.

The Original Stratholme. I love that place the lore is so cool. The fire, and the mobs are really fun to pull for a group. Not to mention all the quest in there are fun to do.

Technically it still has to be the dreaded Halls of Reflection. the last dungeon to challenge the whole party (even tho the tank/healer usually get wipe blame)

Visually, Old Kingdom is pretty cool - though most of us twitch when we see it nowdays as we've all had a string of LFD randoms which seem to continually place us in OK (with a dk saying 'gogogogogo', 'do all bosses' and 'hurry i have 10mins' all the while the hunter is already pulling even tho the healer has dc'd and the warrior says 'i'm rolling on tank gear so deal with it') :D

Even though I have been an alliance player since I started, I'd have to say that Shadowfang Keep is still one of my favorite dungeons. I hope it stays around in Cataclysm so Worgen players can experience it (although that would be kind of ironic). I also remember being totally amazed when you summon the 1st (or 2nd?) boss in Uldaman. How the light comes out of the staff and goes through the model of the city, amazing.

But favorite by expansion:
Vanilla - Gnomeregan
Burning Crusade - Caverns of Time: Dark Portal
Lich King - Azjol-Nerub

Uldaman gets serious points for letting you be Indiana Jones with the staff and the model of the city. Blackrock is cool, but which one to choose from, BRD, LBRS, UBRS? That leaves me my all-time fave, the now neglected Dire Maul, which sits all by itself unless someone seeking the Insane or Loremaster title stops on by to visit.

For me:

Vanilla: Blackrock Depths
TBC: Shattered Halls
WotLK: Pit of Saron

LoL, my group yesterday when I was on my hunter had the tank nerd, rage quit. We had a geared Ret Pally who pulled the first two sets of mobs and the tank said, " you don't need me" and quit. When then proceeded to clear the place with the Ret Pally tanking, 2 dps and a healer. Guess the tank got real upset when none of us said "oh no dont' quit." We've come a long way from when that instance caused fear and loathing in the masses.

Maybe because it was the first dungeon I ever did, but I really liked BFD.

How about in other games beside WoW? For example I never played Ultima, Everquest, Acheron's Call, City of Heroes, etc. Were there any dungeons (the generic 'dungeon', either raid or 5man) as massive and impressive as Black Rock Mountain?

All I have to say is Dire Maul tribute runs. Those are amazing and so much fun to do, and you actually had to kind of think the first time you ever did it.

Although gnomer gets a second because it was the first instance I ever ran. It scared the crap out of me to because a warlock guildie who was 60 asked if I wanted to be run through with one of his friends. Needless to say shortly thereafter I had my face smashed in by a doomguard. It was one of the best dungeons ever.

how could I forget SFK! I retract my previous statements. Shadowfang wins in my book! The lvl 85 heroic version will be awesome nostalgia points!

I've been thinking about this ever since I saw this thread, and I can't decide.

I'm gonna say Dire Maul, though.

I'm going to have to go with Gnomeragon. A ton of people dislike that place, but when I think back to it, I definitely had the most fun in that dungeon. It's pretty large, has a lot of places you can go, and just has a pretty epic feel from the start with the troggs that come through the holes in the wall while you try and blow them up.

There were alarm bots that people always tried to watch out for but somebody always failed... a nice little escort quest, and pretty awesome bosses for the level that it was.

Also... gnomes flying out of the tops of the tanks and screaming, "Woaah!" when you killed them were just hilarious.

I've had the opportunity to revisit the Azerothian dungeons on my druid while resto-LFG-leveling her. I think that the Blackrock Mountain dungeons, while complicated as hell to get around (and I get lost at the drop of a hat), are by far the funnest I've done in a while.

UBRS by miles for me.
Can't really think of any TBC-dungeons I enjoyed much, but Pit of Saron was alright in LK I suppose.

Gnomer would have been great if they had split it up like SM, Mara, DM, and the Black Rock dungeons, but it just takes way too long to run start to finish especially when trying to do it using LFD.

BRD for Vanilla, imenselly fun atmosphere and a place you had to get to know (which we did).
Shattered Halls in TBC. I grew most of my chest hairs tanking it as a warrior. :)
HoR in WotLK. Genuinly hard even in good gear and really rewarding clever play.

i think heroic shattered halls is hands-down the best dungeon in the game. when it was current content it was a test of skill at your class (when you didn't take a group of 3 mages, a tree, and a pally tank). when i was doing the tk/ssc attunement quests and i had to do shattered halls within 30 minutes (or w/e time limit it was) in half kara gear i took a hunter for cc. that place with 1 or no cc was a true test of skill when it comes to 5 mans for a warrior tank. truly the most memorable 5 man i've ever done. that 7 mob pull was a nightmare and most 5-6 mob pulls were very intimidating for new tanks and pugs, even with 2-3 mages. casters and melee in the same pull made it hard for some to set a priority of which to kill first and cc first and where to pull.

sfk would be second (and best in vanilla) just because that was my first dungeon i ever ran and had no clue what in the world i was doing except i was supposed to somehow make all these npc's attack me somehow and not anyone else in the group. 2hander tanking with no talent points ftw!

i've never been a lore buff so places like brd and strat didn't really do it for me. people who love lore really love those places for some reason.

for wotlk it would be heroic an just because it takes 5 minutes to run for the random daily.

I prefer non-linear dungeons with unlockable side doors that provide shortcuts to the later parts of the instance. I also like subquests within the instance for interesting and useful things(like enchants). I enjoy odd and unique areas that showcase the character of a particular race of beings who are your enemies. I also enjoy a bit of comedy(such as SOUL CRUSHING TAUNTS). Blackrock Depths gets my vote for best all-around dungeon, despite people's complaints that 'it's too hard'. Lol.

Blackrock Depths, Shadowfang Keep, and Dire Maul are my favourites. BRD if I have to pick one for largely the reasons Durenas mentions.

Deadmines not for the fact that it might be good or bad, but the simple reason when you are new to the game you don't know what a rotation is ect ect, but you get to that final door and it opens up into a massive cavern with this huge ship and plankway. It's like in FOTR when they enter the halls of dwarrowdelf. It just tells you that the world is bigger than you currently know.

For pure skill and design I would say Shattered Halls or Old Hillsbrad Heroic, I mean bloody hell imagine having to have that kind of skill with the player base now, it's guild only runs thank you.

I always liked Wailing Caverns because it wasn't linear like Deadmines.

I haven't played in a long while now, but I 100% agree with this. As a warrior tank in TBC, this was easily my favorite 5-man. For Vanilla, SM all the way. The layout was ahead of its time compared to all the other dungeons, and the place had a really awesome feel to it. Strat and Scholo were also pretty damn cool.

I remember exploring as a lowbie back in Vanilla and finding the Plaguelands for the first time. I kept waiting for something to kill me, but it was quiet and empty. It creeped me out big time. Back in the day, that was serious business!

scholo, dm and blackrock - vanilla
H shattered halls and shadowlabs - BC
ICC 5 mans

I really enjoyed doing the tribute run in DM.. use to do that daily back in the day. Scholo was just a bad ass zone from first to last pull in there.. some optional bosses and back when it was a 10 man it was a blast. UBRS raids - epic

For WOW:

Vanilla: Everything in Blackrock Spire

BC: Shattered Halls for the challenge but for design I liked all the tempest keep dungeons. Karazhan wasn't bad either

Wrath: Cot Stratholme

Now for the best dungeon of all time the award goes to Everquest and the dungeon is Sebilis. IMO it is the coolest dungeon design I have ever seen!
