Generally you want Chaotic Skyflare for your meta, Purified Dreadstone to activate it, and Runed Cardinals and Potent Ametrine for the rest. Which of those two you choose is mostly dependant on the socket bonus.

Just use rawr, you don't want to socket only crit, because there are diminishing returns thresholds that will need you to stack haste based on what your base haste is at the time.

Once you download rawr, load yourself into it and set your buffs, you will get a list of the best gemming for the items you are wearing at that time.

its correct, sp/crit, sp/spirit, 23sp and possibly some sp/haste if your haste isn't high enough. When you use rawr make sure you go into the buffs tab and select all the raid buffs you'll have for a 25 man so you get proper modeling.

As for your gear, outside of the purified lunar dust you are using it looks fine.

True, but those Diminishing Returns only start to be noticeable when you can maintain a more or less constant up-time on hot-streak. I haven't pin-pointed this "soft-cap" yet, but it's sure to be somewhere above 70% effective crit rate on fireball.

To SpoonF3d; I have to discourage sole reliance on rawr. There is a saying in all computer assisted calculations, "Garbage in - garbage out!" and in the case of rawr, there is still a whole lot of garbage that isn't sorted out. Rawr recommends that I gem haste/sp for my own fire mage, which has about 60-65% effective fireball crit rate, but SimulationCraft calculates a higher scaling factor for crit than haste. I have more confidence in SimulationCraft simply because I can follow exactly what goes in and what goes out.

The point where it got really interesting with rawr was when I excluded the haste gems from the gemming template, leaving only the crit-gems as the best possible choice (Simple test of the validity of the results) but lo and behold, rawr still recommended gemming haste. It was at that point that I concluded that rawr was too buggy to be trusted as a stand-alone tool for gearing and gemming choices.

To gem my fire mage, I took a look at the top fire mages on my server in wow-heroes and what I saw was red sockets get Runed Cardinal Ruby; yellow sockets get Reckless Ametrine (sp/haste) and blue get Purified Dreadstone sp/spirit. So, that's the way I've gemmed mine. What I am finding as I raid on the toon is that I love haste and can't get enough of it.
