View Full Version : Tanking Back from a long break...

...to find GEARSCORE. I used to main tank a progression guild about a year ago and quit for a while. I just recently came back and would like to get into some pickup raids.
I haven't tried very hard to get into raids, knowing that my gear score is likely on the lower end and my gear needs some upgrades, so I'd like to know where I should start. I've tried to do some research on all the new gear but it's a bit overwhelming. I've been doing the daily heroic, but I haven't even been able to get into lower 10man raids, because I've never been there before. I couldn't even get into Onyxia though I did it back in the day when it was actually challenging.
I raided for 4 years previous to this, 2.5 of those years on my warrior as a tank. Apparently the only thing that gets people's attention is gearscore, so I guess that's the place to start. Any ideas for 5man upgrades for me? What pieces of my gear would be worth gemming with epics and what is not? I got turned down for icc10 because i didn't have 40k unbuffed hp, so I was tempted to go out and completely regem my gear but I'm not sure that's the best move. What tips would you give a returning tank, only looking to pug on occasion?
Thanks a bunch for your help.

YOu can start with random heroics for triumph badges, that will get you a lot of upgrades in dalaran.

Okay we are gonna Slot by Slot going with Non-Raid Drops.
Helm - http://www.wowhead.com/item=47677 or http://www.wowhead.com/item=48429 (if you insist on having the set bonus).
Neck - the socket makes this good.
Shoulders - change the gem to an Epic Dodge/Stam, Agi/Stam, Expertise/Stam, or Stamina gem.
Cloak - this is good.
Chest - get http://www.wowhead.com/item=48436 or have http://www.wowhead.com/item=47591 made.
Bracers - get http://www.wowhead.com/item=47570 made.
Gloves - get http://www.wowhead.com/item=48449
Belt - this is good.
Legs - get http://www.wowhead.com/item=48445
Boots - this is good, change the orange gem to Epic Def/Stam.
Rings - get http://www.wowhead.com/item=47731 and maybe Farm Heroic Trial of the Champion for http://www.wowhead.com/item=47243
Trinkets - add http://www.wowhead.com/item=47735 to your arsenal. Farm for http://www.wowhead.com/item=47216 in Reg Trial of the Champion. These two Trinkets will be your staples for a while. If people grief you about Health, then use the Heart and Essence together.
Weapon/Sheild/Ranged - what you have is good.
Gems - General rule regarding gems is all Stamina with 1 purple to meet the requirement for the meta.
Never gem with Orange gems.
If you need Expertise, or Hit Rating use Purple or Green gems.
Only use Yellow if you need to get to the defense cap.
Socket bonus - if the socket bonus in a helm is +12 Stam, gem for the bonus (since for the lose of 3 stam you get 10 of something else).
If the bonus is +9 stam for 1 non-blue gem, a lot of tanks will gem for the bonus.
If the bonus is +6 stam for a each non-blue gem, most tanks will just gem pure stamina.
Overall your current gear really isn't that much out of date though.
Get into Onyxia 10/25, ToC 10/25, VoA 10/25 to get gear, hell I would take you as a OT in ICC10.
Thing is people are total idiots when it comes to what they want from a tank.
A few months back, I had done a ToC25 weekly raid pug, everyone whined because one of the OTs had less than 40k health.
O.o wtf, back when people were doing ToC25, tanks were considered godly if that had 40k health.
Hell I have seen people leave a Random, because I hadn't changed into my tank gear yet... and they saw my health.
Regarding Frost Emblem - you have several choices to choose from, given your gear, its kinda hard to make any suggestion over another imo.
If you have gold to burn, you can get legs and boots crafted from ICC recipes.

As Selene said about the gems, gem straight stamina instead of what youre doing now. Apart from it beeing in general the most beneficial thing to do as you have noticed pugs pay a lot of attention to it. Expertise is more of a threat stat and less of a survival stat than it used to be since parry haste is dissabled for many new bosses. Hit is also in general not that important, since threat is not much of an issue. Dont know what your soft cap is for it but over 300 seems like a lot. Also as mentioned doing a string of HCs can upgrade your gear fairly quickly these days.
The only reason I wouldnt take you in a pug is the fact that you have non epic gems. Not because the ones you have are that bad (especially considering you have been away but pugs dont take that into consideration). Its because non epic gems or missing enchants for that matter tells me a person either doesnt care or doesnt know better, so more of a symbolic thing.
All that beeing said your gear isnt too bad already and on my realm I dont think anyone would react to you tanking all of the 10 man content apart from maybe ICC. Even there though you already have more HP with the buff than we had when we started it.

This is why I do, have, and always will love Tankspot. You guys are great. I know its not tough stuff, but its hard to jump back in for me, especially when so much has changed and this late in the game. I've been turned down for a combination of they didn't like my gear/gearscore or because I haven't done it, which gets me indignant because I've been in the end progression since vanilla and I get all elitist and snobby and I know this game is not terribly hard right now :P I know I would be fine in most of these instances, but its hard to convince others.
You've given me a great place to start and a way to wrap my head around things. I really appreciate the suggestions and the time you've taken to look at my gear. You guys are great! <3

NP and I personally think the GS addon is one of the worst things ever.
