View Full Version : Tanking Clutch of Fortification vs. Ashen Band of Endless Courage

Thoughts? From what I read about the armor proc on the Band, the straight armor on the Clutch is seeming more attractive everyday. It's seeming like kind of a toss up though. My Armor>Stam>Threat mentality is telling me to go for Clutch, but I'm getting held up on the straight Stam and the hit on the Band.

For a quick breakdown:
Clutch of Fortification
+560 Armor
+8 Str

Ashen Band of Endless Courage
+44 Stam (Assuming Stam gem)
+19 Defense and Dodge
+55 hit
+ 1 Lame Armor Proc

I notice people keep Signified Ring of Binding over Band, and the main difference between it and Clutch is resistances, some def and 240 armor, while -76 str. Mostly, I'm not noticing that many people with Clutch and I'm just curious more than anything.

There are a couple of good combos.

A) Clutch of Fortification (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47731) + Band of the Twin Val'kyr (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=48027)
B) Band of the Twin Val'kyr (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=48027) + Devium's Eternally Cold Ring (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50185)
C) Devium's Eternally Cold Ring (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50185) + Ashen Band of Endless Courage (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50404)

Personally I struggle between B and C.

But I have settled on C, due to the base stats on the Ashen band being greater than the Twin Val'kyr (aside from the base armor).

This is where gearing preferences make the decision more than what's "better". I personally go for armor rings.

Clutch is great until you can pick up Devium's ring.

In terms of EH the Cluth's armor is worth about 6 stamina more than the rep ring's stamina so basically it comes down to 6 stamina, 8 strength vs 19 dodge, 19 defense, 55 hit and a horribly non aknowlegeble proc. The whole thing is quite situational In terms of survival bosses generally the Cluth is better for Festergut and the Ashen is better for Sindragosa and The Lich King since they have their fair share of magic damage which values the stamina more relative to armor.

This is generally what I'm thinking, where it's essentially a toss-up. Once Devium's drops, I'm putting it in for the rep ring. The Val'kyr ring is a personal favorite of mine and its stat allocation outweighs its iLevel by a lot. Most of the answers to these kinds of questions are "Use what's best for the situation," which I wholeheartedly agree with. Thanks guys and to krc for the more in-depth stat breakdown =D

Well, honestly, I think it's hard to make a case for 6 Stamina being better than 19 Dodge, 19 Defense, and 55 Hit--plus a proc that, while a bit underbudget, is still up at least twice per most boss fights.

I would never use the Clutch over the Exalted ring, the Exalted ring simply has head-and-shoulders more stats on it.

When I ran the EHP calcs ashen band was only more EHP once you get the exalted and socketed with +30 stam. So exalted ashen band > clutch of fortification, but the H-Twin Band of the Valk'yrs > exalted ashen band.

How about Clutch vs Abomination's Bloody Ring, with a 30stam gem...?

I picked up Abom's ring today, and it looked to be better than Clutch, but if people are considering Clutch to be better than the rep ring... I'm not sure?

hmm...so no love for Abom's ring?
With the stam gem, I figured all that you lose from Clutch is the armor...how much is that small amount of armor worth in terms of EH?

11 armor ~ 1 stam (values vary due to gear levels etc. but this is a good estimation mark) so 560/11 ~ 51. So the armor on the clutch of fortification is worth about 51 stam worth of EHP.

Edit: for clarification this means that in terms of raw EHP, the clutch of fortification just barely beats out even the heroic version of Abomination's Bloody Ring.

People get items named after them for contributing to the community, not being a forum admin.

I do have two items named after me properly in another MMO, so I guess I can survive for now. Kaze, I'm sure you will have your day someday! ;)

Honestly surprised they haven't made an item called "Cider's Helm" yet though...

Oh no kazey, we see the deep seeded jealousy! I can feeeeel it, comin in the air tonight, oh lord.

Anyway, when gearing for EH, you need to consider your options for the specific fight, yadda yadda yadda. Personally, when I choose which rings I'm wearing for a boss, if it's festergut, saurfang, other things that hit real hard with physical damage it's obviously got to be the clutch + exalted ring. Anything with magic damage i'm rocking Aboms + Exalted.

One thing I would like to bring up, is that like with anything else we choose here in the minute differences of how to gem/gear/chant things, is that we're talking about percentage points of a percentage point in difference of survivability. How often is that 560 armor going to take that 3rd inhale festergut pounding down to a survivable level if you're healers are off? Probably never, maybe once out of the next 6 months you'll live by 600hp(unless you're a damn paladin in which case it'll never happen, why are you wearing rings anyway you overpowered P******?).

Though obviously the little things help, ever little thing helps, and that's the difference between those of us whom are really good tank, and those whom are just normal everyday, "wtf is a tankspot?" tank.

The marginal gains from individual pieces don't matter, but those marginal gains across several different pieces of gear DO matter.
