I take NO CREDIT for writing any of this. This is just an accumulation of information from wowwiki.com, wowhead.com and stratfu.com. I just used the information from these 3 sites and combined them into this very detailed guide for my guild, which I then thought to share with all of you. (I love tankspot.com!) So again, I did NOT write any of this.

Overview

Featuring three major phases and numerous adds, topped off with a 15-minute enrage timer, this encounter tests a raid's ability to deal with setbacks in a matter of seconds. Debuffs must be dispelled within seconds to prevent deaths, and adds must be killed within seconds so that the Lich King can be focused on. If adds are not dealt with quickly enough, they can result in a wipe due to the enrage timer. Fortunately, a raid is only required to reduce him to 10% of his health within the enrage timer, requiring a grand total of at least 17,400 damage per second on 10 Man Normal mode, or 78,300 damage per second on 25 Man Normal mode.

The encounter against the Lich King, appropriately for its level, requires more than your average raid. Personal mistakes, even more so than in the other Icecrown bosses, can quickly become raid mistakes, and soon after that - wipes. The fight may seem overwhelmingly complicated, but as soon as you are comfortable and familiar with what spells are cast when, it should become much easier.

You will want your standard raid composition - 2 tanks & 3 healers on 10-man or 3 tanks & 6 healers on 25-man.

Strategy

Phase 1: 100% - 70%

(Inflicts 150% weapon damage and stuns all targets in a frontal cone.)
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/0/0c/Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png/32px-Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png) Soul Reaper (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D69409) Inflicts 50,000 Shadow damage and increases the Lich King's physical damage by 100% after 5 seconds. Used on the current tank.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/0/0a/Ability_creature_disease_02.png/32px-Ability_creature_disease_02.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_creature_disease_02.png) Necrotic Plague (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70337) Infests the target with a deadly plague, causing 50,000 Shadow damage every 5 seconds for 15 seconds. If the target dies while afflicted or the effect ends, this effect will gain an additional stack and jump to a nearby unit. If this effect is dispelled, it will lose a stack and jump to a nearby unit. Whenever this effect jumps, The Lich King's power will increase.
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/3/30/Spell_deathknight_bloodplague.png/32px-Spell_deathknight_bloodplague.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Spell_deathknight_bloodplague.png) Plague Siphon (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D74074) Increases physical damage dealt by 2%. Gained when Necrotic Plague jumps. Lasts 30 seconds.
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/bd/Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png/32px-Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png) Infest (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70541) Deals 9,425 to 10,575 Shadow damage to all enemy players within 50,000 yards. In addition, the targets will take increasing Shadow damage per second, starting at 1,000. This effect is removed when the target has more than 90% health.
On the pull, bring the Lich King back towards the outer circle, away from the stairs. Melee DPSs from behind the boss in normal fashion, while the ranged and healers should spread to the sides leaving the center of the room open.

Infest will deal constant raid damage throughout the fight, and as it and most damage are shadow or frost, Shadow and Frost Resistance Auras are recommended. Infest debuff is removed when the target's health reaches 90% and higher.

Approximately 15 seconds into the fight the Lich King will summon a Shambling Horror with 1.84 million health. The offtank needs to pull it to the center of the platform facing away from the raid. The Shambling Horror has 2 abilites, Shockwave, a frontal cone ability and Enrage, which needs to be dispelled by a rogue or hunter.

Also throughout Phase 1, a player will get the disease Necrotic Plague which deals 50k damage after 5 seconds. This player must run to the OTs position and be cleansed. The cleansed Plague will jump to either the OT or the Shambling Horror. If it jumps to the OT, wait until the person who brought in the debuff has moved away and cleanse the OT so that the Plague jumps to the Shambling Horror. As more Shambling Horrors join the fight (1 every minute) the Plague will spread from one to the next as they die, increasing in damage. If it jumps back to the OT, cleanse him again to return it to a Shambling Horror. If the only Shambling Horror up dies and the OT gets cleansed, the Lich King will cast it on another player and the process starts over.

Also in Phase 1, the Lich King will summon Drudge Ghouls 3 at a time. The off tank should pick these up. The Necrotic Plague can jump to the Drudge Ghouls and gain stacks. Eventually at 6-7 stacks the Necrotic Plague will be doing 300-400k per tick (in 10 man at least). The ghouls are mostly harmless, even plate DPS classes can "tank" them. The OT should still try to gather them.

Soul Reaper will affect only the tank, inflicting 50k damage to them, as well as doubling the Lich King damage - all that 5 seconds after the application of the debuff. Healers and tanks, keep an eye for that, and time your trinkets and big heals for when it expires.

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/613/icclkshamblinghorror.jpg

The first phase transition takes place when the Lich King reaches 70%, so try to time that with the last of the Adds going down. Once he reaches 70%, everyone needs to move quickly to the outside of the platform, as the Lich King is running to the center of the platform. Ranged/Healers should spread out and DPS should work on finishing off any remaining adds.

Phase Transition: 70% and 40%

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/e/e8/Spell_frost_arcticwinds.png/32px-Spell_frost_arcticwinds.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Spell_frost_arcticwinds.png) Remorseless Winter (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D68981) Creates a massive winter storm, dealing 9,425 to 10,575 Frost damage per second to all surrounding enemies within 45 yards.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/4/49/Ability_warlock_shadowflame.png/32px-Ability_warlock_shadowflame.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_warlock_shadowflame.png) Pain and Suffering (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D72133) Inflicts 2,828 to 3,172 Shadow damage to enemies in a frontal cone, as well as an additional 500 Shadow damage every 3 seconds, stacking up to 5 times.
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/d/d7/Spell_frost_frozencore.png/32px-Spell_frost_frozencore.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Spell_frost_frozencore.png) Summon Ice Sphere (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D69103) Summons 1 Ice Sphere. Ice Pulse inflicts 5,000 Frost damage over time and has 5 yards range. When it reaches its target, cast Ice Burst, doing 10,000 frost damage to all enemies within 10 yards and knocking them back (off the edge of the platform to their death).
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/5/55/Spell_shadow_summonvoidwalker.png/32px-Spell_shadow_summonvoidwalker.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Spell_shadow_summonvoidwalker.png) Summon Raging Spirit Every 20 seconds for phase 1,5 and every 15 seconds for phase 2.5 the Lich King will summon a raging spirit with Soul Shriek.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/b8/Ability_warlock_improvedsoulleech.png/32px-Ability_warlock_improvedsoulleech.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_warlock_improvedsoulleech.png) Soul Shriek (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D69242) Inflicts 18,850 to 21,150 Shadow damage and silences the affected targets for 5 seconds. Targets a frontal cone.

The Lich King will begin channeling the spell Remorseless Winter and will also cast Pain and Suffering at a random player. Pain and Suffering is a conal ability that deals damage and leaves a stacking DoT, so everyone spreading out will help to keep the amount of stacks/damage down.

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8495/icclkremorselesswinter.jpg

Also throughout this phase the Lich King will summon Ice Spheres. The Ice Spheres will target a random player and begin moving towards them. Once they target a player a blue beam will point at the player they will cast Ice Pulse on the player, dealing damage to anyone within 5 yards, which is more reason to stay spread out. If the Ice Sphere reaches its target it will explode, dealing damage and knocking anyone within 10 yards back, and probably off the platform. The Ice Spheres have very little life and a ranged or two should be tasked with killing them before they reach the group.

Lastly, throught this phase, random party members will be targeted with Summon Raging Spirit (Three mobs with 885,400 health on 10 Man Normal), which will make a ghosted copy of the character. The tanks should pick these up and face them away from the raid, as they have a conal Damage/Silence ability. Any DPS not killing Spheres should help burn these Down.

Note: Ranged DPS should focus burn the orbs, while the melee works on the Raging Spirit.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6021/icclkicesphere.jpg

After 60 Seconds, this phase ends when the Lich King kneels and lights up the ground around him and everyone should quickly move back onto the main platform as the Lich King will begin casting Quake, which destroys the outer portion of the platform, leaving your raid with less room to maneuver. Naturally, you should all move in when you see him casting Quake. Continue to kill any remaining Raging Spirits, but the tank should pick up the Lich King again as quickly as possible.

Phase 2: 70% - 40%

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/bd/Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png/32px-Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png) Defile (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D72754) Inflicts 3,000 Shadow damage to all players in the targeted area. Every time a player takes damage from this, Defile's damage and area increase.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/d/d5/Achievement_boss_svalasorrowgrave.png/32px-Achievement_boss_svalasorrowgrave.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Achievement_boss_svalasorrowgrave.png) Summon Val'kyr Shadowguard (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D69037) Grabs a random player and slowly carries them away from the platform. If not killed before she leaves the Frozen Throne, the Val'kyr will drop her target to their death.

The Lich King retains Soul Reaper, Necrotic Plague and Infest:

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/bd/Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png/32px-Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png) Infest (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70541) Deals 9,425 to 10,575 Shadow damage to all enemy players within 50,000 yards. In addition, the targets will take increasing Shadow damage per second, starting at 1,000. This effect is removed when the target has more than 90% health.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/0/0c/Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png/32px-Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_shadowdance.png) Soul Reaper (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D69409) Inflicts 50,000 Shadow damage and increases the Lich King's physical damage by 100% after 5 seconds. Used on the current tank.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/0/0a/Ability_creature_disease_02.png/32px-Ability_creature_disease_02.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_creature_disease_02.png) Necrotic Plague (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70337) Infests the target with a deadly plague, causing 50,000 Shadow damage every 5 seconds for 15 seconds. If the target dies while afflicted or the effect ends, this effect will gain an additional stack and jump to a nearby unit. If this effect is dispeled, it will lose a stack and jump to a nearby unit. Whenever this effect jumps, The Lich King's power will increase.
Once Quake has finished, Phase 2 begins. During this phase, the Lich King still uses Infest. He also begins to use Soul Reaper on the tank, which deals initial damage followed by 50k shadow damage 5 seconds later. The Tanks should taunt back and forth after getting hit with Soul Reaper so that 5 seconds later the tank does not take a melee hit and the 50k damage at the same time. The raid should position similar to Phase 1, however the Ranged should stay spread as much as possible.

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/715/icclkphase2.jpg

Also in Phase 2 the Lich King will begin to cast Defile. The boss will emote "The Lich King starts casting Defile." in a raid warning. When he does that, everybody should get ready to move. He will target a random player and it is a 1.5 second cast. At the end of the cast, a black pool will appear under the targeted player. Every second the pool will deal damage and for every time it deals damage to a player, it grows in size, so 3+ players getting caught can cause the pool to quickly grow faster than they can get out, ending up in the pool growing over the entire platform wiping the raid. Players should be aware of when the Lich King is targeting them with this ability and be ready to move. The Defile pool last for 30 seconds.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7166/icclkdefile.jpg

Throughout Phase 2 the Lich King will summon Val'kyr Shadowguards (450,000 health on 10 Man Normal) who will take about 5 seconds picking a target and then will fly over and pick them up and then slowly begin to fly towards the edge of the platform. If they reach the edge they will throw the player off, so they need to be burnt down quickly. Due to Defile taking up portions of the platform, ranged are probably preferred for burning these down.

These are immune to snares, and already move quite slow, but they can be stunned so if you OT has stun abilities they should move to stun these.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9787/icclkvalkyr.jpg

Phase Transition: 70% and 40%

Phase 2 continues until the Lich King is at 40%, at which time he goes into another Transition Phase. The raid should move to the edge of the available platform and the first pulse of Remorseless Winter will reapply the extended platform. The Raging Spirits spawn a little more frequently in this phase so DPS needs to be quick to burn them down.

Phase 3: 40% - 10%

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/2/2f/Spell_deathknight_strangulate.png/32px-Spell_deathknight_strangulate.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Spell_deathknight_strangulate.png) Harvest Soul (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D68980) Inflicts 7,500 Shadow damage every second for 6 seconds. If the target is still alive after the channel is over, their soul will be transferred to Frostmourne.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/4/4f/Inv_jewelcrafting_shadowspirit_02.png/32px-Inv_jewelcrafting_shadowspirit_02.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Inv_jewelcrafting_shadowspirit_02.png) Vile Spirits (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70498) Summons 10 Vile Spirits that become active after 30 seconds. These will cast Spirit Burst when they become active doing 14,138 to 15,862 Shadow damage to players within 5 yards.
The Lich King retains Soul Reaper, Infest and Defile:

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/bd/Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png/32px-Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png) Infest (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70541) Deals 9,425 to 10,575 Shadow damage to all enemy players within 50,000 yards. In addition, the targets will take increasing Shadow damage per second, starting at 1,000. This effect is removed when the target has more than 90% health.

Used on the current tank.
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/b/bd/Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png/32px-Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Ability_rogue_envelopingshadows.png) Defile (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D72754) Inflicts 3,000 Shadow damage to all players in the targeted area. Every time a player takes damage from this, Defile's damage and area increase.
Phase 3 begins once the Lich King again cast Quake so everyone should move back in. During this phase he will again cast Infest, Defile, and Soul Reaper. The now smaller platform will make dodging Defile a little harder.

Along with these he will now cast Harvest Soul, which will deal 45,000 shadow damage over six seconds. If they survive they are sucked into Frostmourne and must fight their way out, weakening the Lich King if they succeed and strengthening him if they fail. Players trapped inside Frostmourne will see Terenas Menethil fighting against a Spirit Warden. They will need to aid Terenas, so he can defeat the warden and release the player from the runeblade's grasp. Healers can heal King Terenas' spirit while he dpses down the tortured spirit within Frostmourne, while DPS classes must kill the tortured spirit before it kills King Terenas. When the tortured spirit dies you will escape Frostmourne. The tortured spirit will channel an interruptable stacking debuff on King Terenas which must be interrupted.

The other new ability for this phase is Summon Vile Spirits, which will summon 10 Vile Spirits floating in the air above the Lich King (66,000 health on 10 Man Normal). The will remain there for 30 seconds during which ranged need to burn as many down as possible. Ground targeted AoE does not seem to affect them, but abilities like Seed of Corruption and DK Diseases do seem to work. After the 30 seconds, any Spirits left will target a random player and charge towards them, exploding for ~15k damage upon reaching them. Ranged should stay spread out and it may be a good idea for melee to spread out once the 30 seconds is about up so that 2+ people standing next to eachother don't get targeted.

You have 15 minutes from the beginning of phase one to push him into phase four or he will enrage and one shot your raid.

This phase continues until the Lich King is at 10%...

Phase 4: 10% - 0%

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/thumb/4/44/Inv_sword_122.png/32px-Inv_sword_122.png (http://www.wowwiki.com/File:Inv_sword_122.png) Fury of Frostmourne (http://www.wowwiki.com/index.php?title=Special:Outbound&f=Lich_King_%28Icecrown_Citadel_tactics%29&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wowhead.com%2F%3Fspell%3D70063) Deals 1000000 Shadow damage to all enemies.

At 10% health, the Lich King will cast Fury of Frostmourne and kill all members of the raid. THIS IS INTENDED - this is not a wipe, so do not release! The Lich King and Tirion will have an exchange during which Tirion destroys Frostmourne using the Ashbringer. The ghost of Terenas Menethil II will appear and resurrect the raid while holding the Lich King in place. Players must use this opportunity to finish off the Lich King.

One thing, Soul Reaper doesn't occur in Phase 1, it starts in Phase 2.

And Necrotic Plague doesn't exist after P1.

How big were the add health and number nerfs (10m)? If it was any more than 25% then we're gonna smash him to pieces.

How big were the add health and number nerfs (10m)? If it was any more than 25% then we're gonna smash him to pieces.

Noticeable but not crazy nerfs. It's just better tuned now where before it was slighly overtuned.

Yikes, the nerf wasn't even 10% health, vile spirits went from 70k to 66k, ragers lost 80-100k. The damn p2->p3 transition is still hard as ever.

Fun fact about the drudge ghouls:
if you have agro on one and then jump off the platform they will follow you.

Have anyone tried to intentionally drop the raging spirits down when the quake hits by positioning them so they are on the extended platform that goes away ?

People have; they end up hanging out on the wall, then coming back invisible and killing people.

I recommend against this.

Making good progress with this in 10 man but currently struggling with phase 3:
- Not having much luck with AOEing the vile spirits in the air. Our raid comp last night included 2xSPriest, 1xWarlock, 1xHunter. Mindsear didn't seem to be very effective, even glyphed (in spite of what I've read saying it is very good for this - could that be target choice?). Not sure what I should be advising the hunter to do (he was new to the encounter). Some AOE works, some doesn't. If we can't kill them in the air, is there a smart way to handle them coming down (or is it just a case of spreading out and healing through the explosions). Is it worth putting people on single target? Our next raid is likely to be more melee heavy... Frost trap placed where they spawned slow them?
- Not entirely clear on what each class should do if their soul gets harvested. He seemed to have a boner for our resto shaman who struggled every time. Our resto druid was quite concerned about what the hell he was supposed to do without an interrupt (except bash on 1 min cd).

Watch deus vox's 10man part 2. Do what they did by going opposite sides and even if you half ass the killings (5-6 of them don't die) you can still do it very smoothly, off tank can absorb a lot of adds throughout the fight.----- As a healer you must heal terenas and you MUST INTERRUPT the channeled attack of the warden at all costs, for paladins and priests you must dispel king terenas to cancel it, for shamans you must wind shock and for resto druids you must bash or war stomp.

Our resto druid was quite concerned about what the hell he was supposed to do without an interrupt (except bash on 1 min cd).
Druids have several stuns now. Horde get Warstomp, Bear form has Bash, and better still Cat form has Maim.

It would be quite expensive for resto druid to change all thos forms probably best to just heal the mob.

Pretty sure our druid couldn't save terenas within 60 seconds if he didn't interrupt soul rip, he only survived on our kill because he war stomped.--- Same applied to our priests who did not dispel the soul rip off.

Is there something we are doing or is this just a freaking bad rng. The strat we use for soul reaper is one tank eats with cooldowns and when he has none left I the off tank taunt off but we got screwed a couple times on this from defile being casted on me and then a val'kyr picked me up. yes the other tank was able to taunt back off me but that is pretty screwed up.

Cat/Bear = 35% Base mana = ~1224
Tree = 13% Base mana = ~454

Going cat/bear to interrupt then back into tree is 1700 mana. Not expensive at all.

Sorry Tuffmuffin, but have you done the encounter or are you just speculating?

My understanding would be that the druid has to be healing the friendly npc and/or damaging the hostile npc and only when soul rip is cast stop to disrupt (interupt/stun/cc), then go back to what they were doing before. What would be great to know from someone that's done the encounter is:
- If you stun the npc, will he cast soul rip again? How often?
- Can you cyclone the npc and is that a good idea?
- As a healer generally (or perhaps it needs to be specific by class) what's your best plan when inside frostmourne? Heal and/or dps?

Priest/paladin = spam heals on terenas and dispel. Shaman = spam heals on terenas and wind shock. Druid = spam hots on terenas and warstomp or bash when soul rip is casted, he only does it once because our tauren druid said he only war stomped.

There's a difference between doing the encounter itself and that actual role Swelt. No I haven't been in Frostmourne to find out nor do I particularly care since I'm not a healer and need to worry about it.
Point still stands that even if you only have to shift once to Interrupt (Obviously Horde here wins because of War Stomp), that's still <1700 mana by going Bear/Cat --> Tree. It's still not expensive at all.

/speculation.

Question: Are Raging Spirits immune to knockbacks? Working on this encounter in 25man and i have watched raging spirits literally jump behind the tank. The shamans are glyphed so that they do not knockback; however the boomkin says they are immune and i just wanted confirmation since he was using typhoon.

thanks ahead of time

Edit: Just to clarify, i'm referring to the knockback effect from typhoon, not damage.

He cast soul rip multiple times. I am a resto druid. I got pulled in for the first time yesterday, war stomped the first one. He cast it a few more times. I just tried to heal through it but he ended up dying. I'd say definately go bear and bash, or cat and maim. It's a really long cast maybe 8-10 seconds so you have plenty of time to switch forms and get some rage or combo points.

Soul Rip is an 8 second channeled spell that the Spirit Warden uses every ~20 seconds. (I believe at ~13 and ~34 seconds into the Frostmourne room. Possibly again at ~55? before you leave)

I'm pretty sure that they're immune to all knockbacks, but your tanks might just be having trouble with the hitboxes while trying to reposition them. Tauren spirits are the worst, hitbox is so huge that your tank is sitting right there on outer edge while mob sits so close to inner edge that melee can just about fit behind it. If you would try tanking them at normal range, they turn around and walk away from you.

On 10 man (i dont know about 25man yet) i got teleported in the shadowmourn realm two times, on the 1st one i tried to interupt the channeling spell (bear+bash), which it did work. on the second time i just kept full hots on the NPC and spammed nourish.
Both can work equally fine, as mana is concerned, the mana you will use to go bear and bash is equal (if not less) than trying to outheal the damage. if you got the luxury of mana overheal it, otherwise go bear and bash !

Looking for tips / guidance specifically on 25 man for the handling of defile. On 10 man, it was a relatively simple matter to "run away from the group", but in 25 man obviously this becomes a lot harder to orchestrate. We are currently getting people to group up fairly tight (one ranged/healer cluster, one melee cluster, in a fairly straight line from the centre of the platform to the edge) so that when the 3 val'kyr come that they will all be in the same place and going in the same direction. While that is working pretty well now, the defile that comes straight after is very often wiping the raid.

Now this could just be reaction times, people not running in a smart direction as quickly as they should be, but it's very hard to tell... the alternative is that we are making it impossibly hard for ourselves by being bunched up, and that we should be spreading a bit more before defile comes - limiting the chance that it hits a pack of people. If we were more spread out after the val'kyr had picked up their targets, would we make it easier? Or would we make it even more haphazard (defile on the guy in the middle of a scattered group can't see where to run).

I'vel earned the hard way that 25m LK is a good way to see who you are carrying in the raid. If everyone is alert and on the go even if you all stacked at mid the defile will not grow an inch.

Is there a way to see who hasn't moved? (i.e. something to look for in WOL). Problem I've got at the moment is telling whether it was the person who had defile failing to move far enough away from people, or people failing to move in the opposite direction.

I noticed that Darksend appended a paint classic to the project marmot thread:

No, I have been looking for a failbot that works in the only normal mode that's worth something, and yet they somehow didn't add in defile. World of logs won't really show it cause after 2-3 seconds plenty of people are already sucked in and then the entire raid takes 3-5 ticks and dies.

Just tell your melee to stop dps and spread out just before before Defile is being cast, it's just one Valkyr and you should have no trouble taking it down even if you sacrifice few seconds of dps time from the melee. We do this even for 25man, second Defile+Valkyr is the hardest and we use BL there to compensate for DPS loss caused by spreading out. Also make sure to assign a player+backup to each valkyr for both slowing effects and stuns. It just really unforgiving fight and you need to play it safe, for us it took few nights to of trial&error to figure out a strategy that worked for us and then it was just a matter of trying to get an attempt where no one died from silly stuff like Harvest Soul or Defile right in the middle. We tried the "Portal to Tirion" strategy and it's really unforgiving in terms of reaction times and latency, so we went back to simple "spread out & bunch up" tactic that worked well in 10man.

I know guides recommend saving BL for second transition phase, but we never really had any issues with it because even if you have two Raging Spirits up going into P3, the fight gets so easy at this point that it doesn't even matter.

so we managed to make it into phase 3 but there's kind of a dispute on whether its better to have range dps vile spirits down before they become active or just focus on the boss and heal through it, there doesn't seem to be enough time to get them once they are on the ground.

also if a resto druid gets sucked into frostmourne what exactly should they do since they can't remove the debuff, one idea was to shift in to bear and interrupt it, is that the way to go?

You could have your OT taunt some and explode em (using CDs). But generally want to dps what you can down and kite the rest.

And yea, interrupt it as bear, heal Terenas.

we had a similar problem, 2 nights full of wiping and attempt % were 58 59 61 60 58 60 /cry /cry /cry

the most important thing is situational awareness, once i told the raid to pay more attention to timers things picked up dramatically. if u can c that the valkyr is spawning in 10s , u must make ur raid collapse. as soon as the valkyr spawns, priority is stunning them SPREADING OUT as defile is incoming.

the cooldowns tend to change order in that phase which makes it annoying, first valkyr then defile, then second defile then valkyr, then defile then valkyr etc. so keep a very close eye.

in summary, do the okey cokey in out in out shake it all about and u shud get to 40%.

final hint: shielding is very important, same with raid hots. if people run in different directions infest can be a serious annoyance for healers and oor dps.

The strat can actually be used for the 25man encounter as well but the raid just needs to be more disciplined. Also keep in mind this was written the second week after the encounter was released so some of the information may be outdated (for example Raging spirits spawning instantly).

what kind of positioning do people recommend for phase 2 in the 10 man. we try keeping to the center for valkyr but a defile always gets dropped in the middle and just screws up everything.

also on a separate note what happens if you stand on the stars when the valkyr grabs you?

Collapse / spread out based on timers. If the timers are lined up to happen at the same time, keep spread out, try not to leave the inner ring area, and hope your people can run fast.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but we found a very useful way to deal with the vile spirits in phase 3. A tank can aoe taunt the spirits and single target taunt them once they start moving. more importantly a warrior tank like my self can put vigilance on the tank tanking LK, this gives me the ability to spam taunts pulling them all down. We were having trouble with phase 3 until we started doing this, now its so easy and no one dies.

We position the raid based on the DBM timers and the sequence of the Valk vs Defile. If the Valk is coming up first you stay in the middle. If Defile is going to hit first move the group out slightly towards the edge to drop it and immediately get back to the center for the Valk. People can't drag their feet getting back though or they might be the unlucky one to get picked up. I'm not positive but I think the Valk picks the closest edge from where the person was standing when they get picked up. This lets you drop a Defile on the edge and then have the Valk travel the opposite direction by standing slightly off the center so you're closest to the other side.

My 10man group has done 11\12 now, only gotten a few tries on LK, many dont even know the taccs yet.

How many stacks of Necrotic Plague are we supposed to get on the adds, last attempt the stack was at 15, think it was 750k dmg each 5 sec.

Im offtanking the adds in phase 1, we dont have hunter only a rogue and we used him on my big add to remove enrage from it. So I had the rogue on my add the whole fight, doing it right or can we just let them enrage. Im a druid with like 70k hp tanking the adds.

On 10man the enraged add only hits for about 15k if you keep a demo roar on. It's safe to have them enraged as long as it's 1 at a time, no need to stick a rogue there.

How often does LK use Soulreaper, we are supposed to switch tank on every soulreaper in 10man aswell or blow some CDs only?

Is it feasible for a resto Druid to just heal through getting ported into frostmourne on 10 man or should I throw a bash in there. I am sitting at 6k gs and have the healing exp. I've been ported in there once and seemed to keep him up ok. Maybe just got lucky?

So, seems they hotfixxed the lock porting up when calks drop them as well as warriors interepting back on. Tuesday we extended our lock but people were burned out a bit and had probs with defile, but had a lock on the edge of the platform with his portal up and was picked up every time. Once we saw how well that worked, we said screw it and decided to reverse the lock and do a full clear (main healer and top dps were gonna be missing until today). Today, we go back to the lich king, and still have our top dps missing but we thought we could drop him anyway. We run through first phase easily, but once we got to the second phase our warlock just would not get picked up by the balks at all. 6 wipes and not once did he get chosen, so we assumed they just made it random instead of choosing the person closest to the edge. Next try we found out what they did. The lock didn't drop his portal this time and first valk went straight for him.

Sorry for rambling, but it seems the hotfix on wednesday that changed the shadows edge souls also made it to that if a lock has his portal up then the valks will never target them. Also as I said before, I pulled lk to the edge when one of our warriors was picked up and they get thrown just put of range of interept now .

One other hotfix, though not on the lich king, is that hunters now get chilled to the bone on sindi, rather than just getting unchained magic from time to time.

I think you might be misunderstanding the encounter design. The Val'kyr Shadowguards do not pick up the closest target to the edge of the platform, they simply choose a random target that is not the primary target of The Lich King (possibly/probably Raging Spirits either, not sure on that one though, although we've never had the OT picked up while tanking). Then the Val'kyr will fly to the nearest edge, and drop off the victim. Unless you did thousands (literally) of attempts in which the warlock was never picked up to rule it out entirely, I'm pretty positive it was just random statistical chance that he was not targeted on your initial attempts. I can say Wednesday, this was working (as we did have a warlock picked up in 25 non-heroic) who was able to port back onto the platform. The warrior Intervene trick I can't comment about to be sure, but again, unless you attempted it many times, I would assume it to just be player error/positioning or server/client side latency in which the warrior was dropped out of range of his target before the spell correctly registered.

As for Sindragosa, I can confirm that in both 10/25 heroic/non-heroic, hunters have always been getting Chill to the Bone stacks on the U.S. server since it was released. They're not very noticeable due to the fact that it only can be triggered by Auto Shot and tends to fall off naturally at or before 4 stacks even when under haste effects like Bloodlust/Heroism. If a hunter does get up to 6 or more stacks, they can easily drop it by strafing back and forth repeatedly to stop Auto Shot casts which using instants such as Chimera Shot - Aimed Shot - Arcane Shot for MM or Explosive Shot - Aimed Shot - Serpent Sting as SV.

Maybe the hunter just must have not notice it before, he just hit 7 stacks, and freaked out because he wasn't ever having a problem any of the times we killed her.

But that's one I can't watch myself, but yes we put in about 3 1/2 hours of tries yesterday and quite a few the other night and before when the lock was on the edge he was getting picked up every time, then last night not one time except the time he didn't drop a portal. I MT this fight and unless we just always have the exact same luck on the valks I can pretty much tell who is going to get picked up. We tank him directly in the center and in my experience it is always the person nearest the edge. Maybe they work differently in 10 and 25, as more spawn in 25 and it is pretty difficult to keep everyone closely stacked when a defile and valk are coming at pretty much the same time.

Regardless, he should die tonight as our top dps will be back (10k dps rogue in place of the 6k rogue we had last night) and our shaman is goin ele offspec since it seems we can 2 heal this really as long as defile and valks are handled, and the people having trouble before finally got defile down last night. The extra dps should make valks less of an issue

I saw a warlock port still work this weekend on ten man.

I disagree that proximity to the edge has anything to do with who valkyrs pick. While the whole raid is grouped up near the middle, our warlocks also stand very close to the edge with their portals ready, so if they do get picked they spend less time in the air unable to dps. If who the valks chose had anything to do with who was closest to the edge, those two locks would get picked every time, but they don't. Think about it, if it really was based on proximity, wouldn't all the early strats have been to bring three locks, and have them all stand at the edge so the three of them would get picked every time and be able to use their portals, compeltely nullifying the valks?

3.5 hours of attempts is statistically insignificant when you're talking about who is getting selected in a 25 man raid. If blizz did hotfix anything, there would be posts from more ppl noticing the same thing.

Here is what we did to kill LK.

In phase one, we formed three groups in a triangle, melee, range and OT. We kept a tight triangle, so there wasn't far to run. At the end of phase one the three groups moved towards the outside but in a way that no one was running in front of adds on OT.

In first transition phase, the OT stood to the far left, range in middle and melee/MT on the far right. MT picked up first 2 raging spirits, OT came over and grabbed the third. MT = Warrior, OT = DK, in our case.

Second phase, MT tanked the boss in middle and OT took over after the spirit was dead, normally right after first val'kr. Second phase took some time to learn the timing. War tank would charge val'ker right off the bat cause charge stun is not on DR, he would then concussion and shock-wave, if the add was still heading to edge then he would charge again. We had everyone crank the size of the short timer on DBM, this made missing important stuff impossible. DK would tank the boss and call out Defile targets, with target of target he can save two seconds compared to waiting on DBM to announce. The target would move away from middle and everyone else would avoid them. We also called defile at 3 seconds till cast, raid would know to scatter. There is only two times during phase 2 that he is casting defile, valker and soul reaper at same time. The warrior would taunt LK off the DK when the DK was hit with soul reaper, DK would taunt right back after the soul reaper proc'd. We stoped DPS at 43% and killed the last val'ker, while dps was on val'ker tank took LK near the side in preparation of second transition phase.

In the second transition phase, we blew heroism. There is 4 raging spirits this time, warrior picked up 1,3 and the DK grabbed 2,4.

In phase three, the warrior tanked boss on teleporter and DK tanked last spirit off to the side. The raging spirit died soon after vile spirits appeared. we used 3 range but can be down with two if you have a warrior tank. After the raging spirit was dead the DK taunted the boss, the warrior stood under vile spirits and AOE taunt when they started to descend. Tanks should have a million threat over dps by this time in the fight, warrior put vig on the DK to taunt spam the vile spirits from that point forward. This made phase three extremely easy.

Hope this helps. Also can the vile spirits be taunted in heroic mode?

Thanks for that post, Strife, I found it really helpful.

We went up against LK normal 10 tonight, and I was having a really hard time keeping the Raging Spirits on me during the first transition. One of our DPSers is a ret pally, so there's a lot of AoE in his rotation. That, combined with the occasional silence from the raging spirit, makes it difficult to get aggro initially. I would taunt it, but before it got to me so I could build more aggro, the Pally AoE would be able to hit it a few times. and I'd lose aggro.

After the fact I thought about using a shockwave to build initial threat, as that's kind of ranged.

Anybody have any ideas? Am I being a total noob here? The Raid Leader seemed pretty frustrated, and insisted that I should be able to taunt it. I don't see how I can if it's whats happening is AoE/Aggro - Taunt - AoE/Aggro, but I'd like to know if Im wrong.

Thanks,

Fayre

You said 'before it got to me so I could build more aggro' - are the raiders with the add not running to you? If they're not, there's the key to the problem right there :) Usually I taunt it (it appears right next to me) and hit it with a couple of high-threat moves straight away. Keep an eye on the person with the add and select it as soon as it spawns. Haven't had any issues from AoE except when I haven't hit it with taunt for whatever reason.

Ret pallies were a problem for me too, I think it's down to consecration/holy storming around the time they spawn. I got them to chill out when the raging spirit was about to spawn. They are certainly my vigilance target. At the same time, do what Fayre says wrt having the raging spirit target position themselves in front of you for convenient pickup. Nameplates are good, TidyPlates Threat Plates makes picking out the raging spirit a lot easier.

One thing you might not realize is that there is a difference on the US servers in comparison to the European servers (not sure out Korean/Taiwanese servers).
On the US servers, there was a hotfix a few weeks ago (3 weeks ago if I remember right) that made the Raging Spirit spawn instantly and knock the player down, and it becomes active after ~1 second.
On the EU servers, they still debuff the player for about 5 seconds before knocking the player down, and then become active 1 second later.

There was some discussion about how this might be positively/negatively effecting guilds working on Heroic LK 25. (US has the advantage of up to 5 more seconds of DPS time, at the risk of deaths and inability to position them as well)

Right now there are 3 EU, 2 KR, and 1 TW guild kill of Heroic LK 25, and still no US kill, which is rather surprising after 5% extra buff and many more attempts to work at it in comparison to Paragon's first kill. Also, videos have been released showing strategies which should make it easier as well. Not trying to downplay any of the kills so far or say that US/EU has it easier or harder, just stating that there is still a difference.

Just a quick question about Soul Harvest and Soul Rip: what are the circumstances under which the person harvested into Frostmourne can lose? Last night our Resto Shaman got harvested into Frostmourne, and after spending what seemed like an excessive amount of time (Disc Priest + Holy Paladin raid healing when everyone spreads out to avoid vile spirits FTW amirite) inside, she was killed and kicked out. Is it possible for the soul rip debuff to stack up to the point where even if Terenas is still alive you still "lose"? Or was something else happening?

Why do you need another addon besides the bossmod to track the timing? Bossmods are doing the job quite nicely.

I personally use DXE instead of DBM. It provides all the information I need - Defile cooldown and Summon Val'kyr cooldowns. Very easy to draw the conclusions whether to collapse and then spread or vice versa.

I realize this is a minor portion of the encounter, at least for melee, and it's the responsibility for ranged to deal with it. And probably even more meaningless since we're probably going to start attempts at heroic LK soon (oh god).

I was going over my own damage on Vile Spirits (as well as our other DKs) compared to the top DK World of Log parses and i'm finding that our DKs (myself included) tend to average 150-250k to Vile Spirits while the top parses run over 600k to spirits. Now, I realize all of them have Shadowmourne but i'm pretty sure Shadowmourne doesn't account for 400k+ damage worth of procs to targets in the air.

I'm finding that when I pestilence or attempt to pestilence diseases off of the LK when vile spirits are summoned, the graphic appears, but no diseases actually spreads up to them or only 1 or 2 of them get hit with diseases. I'm guessing this is where the discrepancy comes from but i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. I have the pestilence glyph but i'm not sure how to get the diseases up to them.

We find hunter traps to cause more problems than they are worth so we use a rogue with crippling poisen instead.

This can either be via a backup weapon to swap in or adjusting their spec.

If you really want to push it as much a syou can on the Valkyrs, then you can have raid members adjust their specs/glyphs to improve cleave damage.

We had a feral druid make changes to improve his swipe and it meant he topped the damage on the valkyrs by a decent margin.

i am feral tank as p2 and p3 LK tank in our runs.. the thing is i can survive first and 2nd soul reaper with cds.. survival first, bark skin + 4 t10 set bonus 2nd, but i dont have anything left for 3rd one... so if OT still has an enraged on him or missed the taunt, i am dead.. any suggestions ?

i havent tried yet but thinking, getting dodge trinkets and popping them for 3rd one but it sounds like a considerable armor and sta loss.

Well, stam trinkets usually do have an on-use that could help, otherwise an outside cooldown could help.
If all else fails, try to be out of melee range for a second or two after it hits.

As poster before me said ,external cds need to be rotated on you when you use your cds. Also since you say on 3. soul riper you have problem if your ot is warrior he can use safeguard on you.It is tricky when ot still have add on him,but with using his cd he should not have problem.I am always ot in that fight and my guild never changed tank on LK if I am in raid.
Also what Martie said LK mele dmg in p3 can be avoided a since he is casting many things,so you can buy a lot of time like that and avoid lot of dmg.

Assign a stunner for each mark and instead of traps, you can also have DPS-warrior doing AoE slow with Piercing Howl. If you have protection warrior who is just sitting there being Safeguard-bot, he can be great help with Valkyrs as well.
