View Full Version : Warrior Newish tank looking for advice

First things first, here's ye olde armorye: The World of Warcraft Armory (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Alonsus&n=Udderchaos)

So here's the basic story: I lead a relatively small raiding guild where I want to be able to fill any role in any given raid in case someone drops out for whatever reason. This warrior dinged 80 about two and a half weeks ago and as you can see I've been hitting the heroics something fierce in order to get her ready to be able to tank in ICC 10-man (and the occasional 25-man but those aren't our focus).

My current daily heroic is Forge of Souls (seriously, those boots are a myth) and my daily normal is Halls of Reflection (that cloak is as well) so while I'm working on getting those, the RNG gods seem to be conspiring against me. Now I have a couple questions:

1) I'm currently sitting on 50 Emblems of Frost, is it worth getting the cloak or should I push on for a few days to get the trinket to replace my Black Heart?
2) How do my choices of enchants look or are there simply better ones for effective health?
3) Is it worth keeping the Cleave glyph if my focus becomes raiding over heroics? If not, which glyph should replace it?

Looking forward to replies and advice :)

On talents: you really should go for Vigilance. When tanking in raids, in my experience you don't need shield specialisation so much, I mainly use 2 points as a filler, and you could put the points somewhere else besides the 1 in vigilance (like in imp bloodrage or 2 in cruelty). (vigilance for threat and improved bloodrage for more rage on a clicky, cruelty for more crits.)
On glyphs, currently glyph on devestate is one of the strongest protwarrior glyphs around, get it love.

On gearing I woukld advise to at least get the saronite swordbreakers, they're a huge upgrade over you current bracers. Also you could get a stronger piece for your belt: either through frostbadges or even getting an indestructible plate girdle crafted. It's still a pretty strong piece because of 3 (with buckle) sockets.

How to spend you frostbadges, I'm not sure about that myself.

Try looking at the non-set pieces you can get for triumph badges, for instance: I value the triumph helmet higher then the tier piece, even if you need to give up the 4 set bonus for it. Also. the non-set triump items are1 tier above the non-trophy-t9.

1. I'd say get the cloak first, its very good and propaply will stay on you until cataclysm. Black Heart is very strong trinket as it is and there's no need to rush into upgrading it with emblems of frost trinket.
2. Better EH enchants would be: 30 stamina 15 resilience (10k honor) enchant on shoulders, 225 armor on cloak, 275 hp on chest, 240 armor on gloves (glove reinforcements LW crafted), 18 stamina on shield.
3. I tend to carry Glyph of devastate, shield wall, last stand, blocking, heroic strike, cleaving, vigilance and taunt with me and switching them as I feel most suited for some specific fights.

Many thanks, I'll see how my gear looks with those little tweaks.

The Shield Specialisation's mostly a talent that was left over from my initial tanking spec, so hadn't gotten around to respec out of it yet, I'll put those into Cruelty as I don't find myself rage starved often enough to warrant using Bloodrage mid-fight.

On the glyphs...I'd never actually considered just carrying around a number of them to use on a fight-by-fight basis, sounds like a solid plan to start doing so.

Saving up for a pair of Swordbreakers and I'll keep that belt in mind, though I'll most likely get the EoF one before I find someone to craft it on Alonsus. I've been saving for the non-tier EoT helm next as well, while the set bonus is nice, it won't be a game-breaker to lose those three extra SBs on a bossfight.

Would it be good or bad to use the 15 resil on the shoulder enchant towards my crit immunity and drop some defense (as I'd be doing that with the new enchants) or should I still try to aim for 540 regardless due to the added avoidance I'd get?

http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/60155-aggs-prot-war-tanking-guide.html <- hopefully that can answer the remaining questions that orcstar and Srumaaja didn't already answer.

And here I thought I'd read all the guides...looks like that'll indeed answer any questions I couldn't find a conclusive answer on yet. "Tanks"
