A friend of mine has been playing a prot warrior for some time. When wotlk came out he struggled to get gear to get back into the tanking spot, but eventually made it. He's a great tank and has put alot of work and research into his character--but can't seem to find the answer at this time. He recently took a 2 to 3 month break with no changes to his spec or gear and came back to find himself taking too much damage and dying quite alot again. What has changed in the last 2 to 3 months that could be making him die like this and what can he alter to fix it?
The World of Warcraft Armory (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Archimonde&n=barricaid)

Tell him to check the patch notes. Warriors have not gotten nerfed in the last couple of patches, but something he uses may have changed.

He may also just be a little rusty, or need some gear upgrades (I can't tell because I can't see the armory at work). I'd think that likely he is just rusty at it and needs to get back into the swing.

He has low avoidance totals, but he really shouldn't be dropping too much faster than some other tanks. Maybe you've just gotten used to healing really well geared tanks?

1. He has a few block pieces instead of the more normal Prot Warrior avoidance/hp equivalent. Block still isn't as good as other avoidance / eh stats, replace gear as available
2. He has a threat spec instead of a more survivability oriented spec such as 5/10/56 (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#LVZhiZVItrx0didIzsGo:TcAMmz) or 5/15/51
(http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#LVZhi00xZVItMx0didczsGo:TcAMmz) 3. His glyphs need to be re-worked (missing 1 completely)
4. Should change shield enchant to either defense or stam
5. Need to re-gem to the epic versions

One of the main things in current content is intelligent, aggressive use of cooldowns. This is helped a lot if he uses a spec/glyph combination to allow 2 or 3 minute shield wall but one way or another he should help his healers out with all the tricks available.

It depends on the content he is running, but I see some obvious upgrades that are sorely needed. How he got T9 shoulder swith that blue cloak is beyond me.

I would run ToC some more and have patience. First emblem purchase should be cloak from emblems of valour (as in NAO, STAT, SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN right away). Weapon and ring is next. Shield is a bit harder but that's a hard one to get I'm afraid (other than persistent nax/ulduar runs and pray, or scour the AH for the BoE shield).
I'm assuming that gem upgrades will be coming soon too, probably as he upgrades gear.

As a final note, the shield enchant should almost always be 20 def. He will lose defense with new weapon and ring from HToC 5 man upgrades.
