Recording in game movies

I've been looking around for a good guide on recording in game movies, but can't seem to find something that really covers all the details.

Tankspot has some of the best quality encounter guides and cinematic movies I've seen, and I was wondering if anyone has put together a guide on recording / editing process.

I'm currently using fraps to record, Adobe Premiere / After Effects to edit and export, and YouTube for hosting. The part I seem to have trouble with is the resolution settings. 1920 x 1080 is the resolution I usually play at, but when recording this high, I have trouble exporting in Premiere correctly to avoid boxing when it eventually gets to YouTube.

I know YouTube recommends 1280 x 720 for their HD video support.
Would it be best to set game resolution to 1280 x 720 for recording videos?

What resolution settings do others use for their videos?

Any advice or a link to another thread that I missed would be appreciated.

is the last movie I've done and has the best quality of any movies I've recorded. I know it's still not perfect (don't even comment on the tanking, I sucked :P) but it's decent.

I play at full resolution aswell, recorded the fight and edited it with Windows movie maker (yay for being a cheapass) while using this tutorial for the HD-Quality crap for youtube:

I didn't look through any of them, but there are tutorials for the same thing for Adobe aswell ( YouTube - How to upload videos to youtube in HD Adobe After Effects CS4 and other programs for example), check them out and see if you can get any good results.

Basically it doesn't matter in which resolution you record your movies, it depends on what kind of resolution you make your editing-program give you the finished product in :P


Edit: Lol I didn't mean to embed the full movies, I only pasted the URL, and embed in here they have lowered quality, they look a lot better on youtube... oh well. :P

thanks for the advice, those videos helped a little bit.

I tried recording with wow running at 1280 x 720, but it's just not practical for actually playing. (mainly because it screws up all my addon placement)

Here's a video I recorded at full resolution and figured out how to keep the right aspect ratio in Adobe Premiere :)
