How are druid stats calculated?

Ok I hit 68 so went to Northrend.
what I noticed after the first few quests that the basic quest gear is a great improvement on my current char.

But some questions rise...
1. As I am primary a Feral Specced Druid I always look at AP for more damage. Is that ok?
2. Another thing is the stats on gear. F.e. I have the Writhing Longstaf (http://eu.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=36878)
When I am in game Isee another +735 attack power when in several forms. That part I understand but....with the staff I have like 2600ap..withui it around 1500.
This I dont understand cause 2600 - 735= 1865...
So i wonder about how the calculation is done.
