View Full Version : Keeping that 540 defense

06-17-2009, 08:12 AM
Hi all

I've got some decent gear now from rep rewards, the odd heroic run and from blacksmith guildmates, and it hasn't been a problem to maintain that all important 540 defense. However, as all the new gear drops in heroics, I'm finding that I am presented with really nice stuff that I simply can't wear.

For example, I'm currently at 541 defense and my hand slot is currently sporting the good old Daunting Handguards (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41357). I was also fortunate enough to have the Gauntlets of the Water Revenant (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37722) drop. The gauntlets represent a definate gear upgrade, but would drop me well below the 540 defense level. I can't wear them.

I'm noticing this is starting to happen quite a lot. How do you guys get on with upgrading your gear. Is it a case of being selective and deciding which pieces are going to be all about the defense, or is it a case of holding off until you get the really nice pieces from 10=man and 25-man content ?

Post your armory. We don't know what you're wearing, what race/class you are, if you have any of your gear enchanted/gemmed, what your spec is, etc.

Help us help you.

A few initial comments though:

1) You don't need 540 defense for heroics. You need 535.
2) Unless you're a paladin, expertise is always a better threat stat than hit, especially at your level of progression.
3) Defense > agility, especially when choosing the latter over the former will get you crit.

Hi, thanks for the (very swift!) response.

Sorry, first time posting, and didn't think to post my armory:

Lomu (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Moonglade&n=Lomu)

Where possible I've always gemed for stamina, but I guess a few defense gems in there might help a little. So, if I'm currently running heroics and about to join the guild's first forays into Naxx (10), should I perhaps be thinking about geming defense instead of stamina. I tend to enchant for defense.

I also changed the original post because I was talking about the chest piece when I meant to talk about the hand slot. Sorry for teh confusion.

I feel a bit embarrassed for posting now to be honest...

Yeah, as you noted, one just has to get over the idea that gems are forever. These days we have to rebalance our gems and enchants every time a new piece of gear comes in. Replacing one or more of those blue gems with the "enduring" green gem might take care of the problem. It is expensive and sometimes frustrating, but... there it is.

Yes, I can see me replacing a few of those blue stamina gems with Thick Autumn's Glow (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40015) if a nice piece comes along.

You're right, it's definately a mindset that when you've spent a lot of gold on a gem then it is irreplacable. Thanks for the tip.

I kept running into this problem and I couldn't wear titanguard for a couple of days because Broken Promise had more defense on it.

So what I have been doing from here on is leaving the def enchants on my shield, chest, and cloak to keep around 543+. So if I have a piece of gear that comes in that is an upgrade and less def I can still drop it into place without having to change out all my pieces.

If you are on a shoestring budget, you may wanna try the following guidelines I work with:

1) If its a blue pair of pants, use Jormungar Leg Armor - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38371) instead of Frosthide Leg Armor - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38373), since you know you will replace in a week or so. Once you DO have the shiny epic or better, go ahead and spend away, you will need it.
Note: if you are a LW, the material costs for the LW enhancement are too cheap for you NOT to maximize there.

2) If it is a blue with sockets, I use green level gems. Blue stuff is purposely made to be all stam and defense and nothing more, so you will constantly be regemming as the less defense-more AV/BV/EH epics come your way.
I personally go into further granularity, seeing as I have a JC alt.
Greens for blue items. If I cut a perfect, I squirrel it away and try again.
Perfect greens for heroic/nax10 items (if I have them)
Blues for BiS.

3) May enchants now sport the budget version and the expensive version. For example +8 stats to chest vs +10 stats. The material cost is huge for a small gain, which is great for min/maxing, but not for blues that are upgraded in a matter of days.

4) Most every guide will direct you to (normal!) HoL to get the def trinket, do get that. It's why it is there. After that (or if you cannot get a norm HoL run on your server), go for Repelling Charge - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=39292) from Thaddius/Gluth Nax 10.

Some people may argue that by putting sub-optimal gems/enchants/patches, you are gimping yourself, but I am pragmatic in that i'd rather save my gold for useful purchases (whatever it may be, like BoE epics, crafting related items, etc.), and the differnce of a few stat points at Blue level gear will not save you as compared to gear upgrades. Yes I could do more dailies, but I'd rather be raiding to get the next item up.

Few easy upgrades you can get now:

Tempered Saronite Belt - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40669) -- crafted, easy to pick up
Waistguard of the Risen Knight - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37801) -- BOE so you can buy in AH
Waistguard of Living Iron - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40689) -- purchased with emblems of heroism once you start accruing a few.

Staunch Signet - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44337) -- quest reward from quest-line that takes you through Oculus. Can be done on normal.
Solid Platinum Band - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=43179) -- quest reward from For Posterity - Quest - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=13098) in Gundrak. Can be done on normal.
Gal'darah's Signet - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=43306) -- drop from final boss in Gundrak (on normal)
Dragonflight Great-Ring - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=36961) -- drop from final boss in Oculus

Seal of the Pantheon - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=36993) -- drop from Loken in regular Halls of Lightning. You want to farm for this one, as it comes in very VERY useful for closing in gaps as you shift around gear. Also good for some extra defense to get you back over 540 in a frost set.

Plenty of other picks also available in http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/41986-cider-s-easy-540-defense-gear-guide.html

Thank you Berzerker. That has given me a lot of targets for the immediate future. Guess I'm off to Normal Halls of Lightning tonight then.

All your advice has been very much appreciated. Thank you all.
