View Full Version : DK Tanking for Heroics

I'm a new DK tank... new tank completely for that matter. Every char I've ever played has been pure DPS, so it's a whole new ballgame for me. Most of the tanking specs I see posted refer specifically to 10 or 25-man setups, where the environment is quite different from 5-man heroics due to buffs.

My guild isn't raiding yet, and although I pug raids on my dps, I'm going to be doing 5-man heroics for the most part when spec'd to tank. From what I've read, I'm geared well enough to tank 10-man Naxx, so I'm not worried from a gear/stat standpoint, but I definitely need to get my mechanics sound. And also (which is the point of this thread) determine the best tanking spec for 5-man instance runs.

Can someone point me to a good spec for 5-mans in 3.1? I'm not really leaning towards any particular tree since I have no tanking experience at all. I would like a fairly straightforward rotation if possible as I'm accustomed to using macros pretty extensively - but will learn whatever mechanics I need to to be an effective tank. Thanks for any insight you can provide for me into 5-man DK tanking in 3.1!

If your still collecting gear, I'd recomend Frost spec. Good AoE agro, and maintain single target agro with no problems, from my expierence.

If you got the gear (ie. hight enough avoidance), Unholy, with it's boneshield should interest you. Less AoE, but, from my understanding, high single target threat.

Here's a link collecting different frost builds:

And, for Unholy, try:

Your main rotation will probably be for single target mobs:
Scourge Strike -> Scourge Strike -> Blood Strike -> Blood Strike -> Scourge Strike -> Scourge Strike -> Scourge Strike -> Repeat

With Death Coil/Gargoyle when runes are on CD.

And, on Trash, your looking at keeping Unholy Blight up and bloodboiling/pestilence to hold group agro.
