This movie was made in part as a gift to this community. No one, either here at TankSpot or within the guild, expected the community support and following that Project Marmot movies would generate. We wanted to say thanks. :)

On our final Heroic: Glory of the Raider run, I decided I'd get back into the moviemaking mode that got me involved with the larger World of Warcraft community in the first place. It's been about three and a half years since I've put together a purely cinematic movie. I hope you enjoy it!

I'll include further details about music, software, and other production information in the following post.

Ciderhelm

I'll start with the big stuff and work my way down to the smaller stuff. :p

What music is being played? Where can I download it?
The music is all legally licensed through a production music distribution website. In order:

Invictus by Leon Butler
Codename Ares by Dynamedion
Forward Gladiators by Dynamedion
The Conspiracy by Dynamedion
Science Fiction by Dynamedion
Heroic by Dynamedion

Because of how licensing works for production music, these will cost you about $30 USD per song. For those who may be pursuing a similar project, I use neosounds.com, stockmusic.com, and royaltyfreemusic.com.

What software are you using?
World of Warcraft, Fraps, and Adobe Premiere Elements. I used zero outside software to complete this project. Almost all motion control was handled exclusively in Adobe Premiere Elements, not World of Warcraft.

What kind of hardware are you running?
As it pertains to this project:
Nvidia GTX 285
I7 Nehalem 920
12gb DDR3
64gb Solid State Drive (runs World of Warcraft and Vista 64-bit exclusively)
300gb Velociraptor (records movies from World of Warcraft)
1tb Western Digital (file storage and recording)

What was entailed in this project?
About 50 hours of pure editing time, in addition to many hours of sifting through music tracks and planning shots. I worked with over 400 clips to put this together. The movie was recorded on raid time, so aside from our 20-man becoming a 19-man for the night, the bulk of this movie didn't take additional recording time (the exception being the solo traveling shots).

The movie cost about $300 USD in total for all licenses, as I purchased a license for the font in the title as well (Zapfino Linotype). I've always been in love w/ the font so it was worth it.

Here's how the project looked when all was said and done:

http://www.tankspot.com/photoplog/images/1/1_GloryProject.jpg

Were there any software or hardware issues?
Absolutely. Adobe Premiere was crashing once every half hour or so, and my 1tb drive carrying the lion's share of clips was making sad sounds. My ability to sleep soundly was not doing so hot. My next hardware purchases are external hard drives for backup so I don't have to be as nervous come Ulduar.

Why didn't you name this Heroic: Glory of the Raider?
It looked dumb.

Why didn't you make this 30 minutes?
Because I get bored out of my mind watching 30 minute movies. Because I couldn't afford it. Because my computer would asplode. If you enjoyed this, add in our eventual 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 movies and you'll get your wish. :p

Why are some bosses shown so briefly? Why so few death shots?
The movie aimed to show, at least briefly, every raid encounter that we've covered on Project Marmot. It was meant to be cinematic rather than comprehensive, and I couldn't realistically give equal time to bosses 1-13 and have bosses 14-17, which are way more exciting, get their due respect.

For the same reason, I didn't aim to do many death shots. Most movies focus on the death animation, but there was no way to keep pace on most of the awesome bosses w/ their actual death animation without completely going overboard on slow-motion effects. For instance, Kel'thuzad takes a grand total of 2 seconds to die and drop his phylactery, and Malygos disappears about 20 yards below you with a hungry look on his face.

When did Alextrasza say those words?
That is, word for word, the mail we received after achieving Heroic: Glory of the Raider. It seemed epic enough. :)

Is that a Blood Elf?
Yes. Our female Dwarves are ashamed of their natural appearances. As they should be. (This is one of the very few things I chose not to edit out, it just didn't bother me)

Who's talking before Razuvious?
That's the voice of Baron Rivendare. I went through a lengthy debate with myself on whether to use that, but decided it made the most overall sense to foreshadow the Four Horsemen for people who know the encounter but also wouldn't bother people who didn't know the voices and assumed it was Razuvious. I would have used more Zeliek but I felt the two voice clips I used for Zeliek fit better without overcomplicating it.

Is that a feral Dwarf?
If you spotted it the strange tank swap, yes, it's a feral Dwarf and that's quite normal for them.

Why a land mount?
As you'll be able to tell at a glance from the ending of the movie, flying mounts have enormous animation and latency issues. Land mounts no longer seem to have these issues (though they did back in 2005, which was the last time I made a cinematic movie). Flying mounts also have extremely limited draw ranges that are less of an issue with land mounts due to their slower speeds.

In other words, the small thread of movement throughout the movie, I used what was cinematically best at any given time. I made it logical as to location and consistency, but it's just a natural limit to the WoW engine.

Did an object disappear or appear unexpectedly?
Yes, in a few shots there are objects that pop in or out of view. I carefully edited out the obvious ones that were in the natural focus of the clip, but because WoW's engine is designed for performance rather than moviemaking, those kinds of things are going to be present in too many places to completely root out.

Anub'Rekhan wasn't capitalized correctly?
I made a judgment call on this. Anub'rekhan has spellings with and without a capital "R," but all recent spellings, as well as the spelling of Anub'arak, are lower case. Fortunately Trajan is an all-caps font so it really doesn't matter.

Are you in this movie?
Because of an unexpected hiccup in the raid, I learned quickly that I could tank without an interface! Check me out on the Kel'Thuzad adds. :)

Holy !@#$
That was C'thun.

Very interesting. Been following this project since its birth. And it is some of the best, if not its best in its field of tactical videos out there.

I have nummerous times linked to em to help fellow players or guildies, get some more understanding of the different encounters. Keep up the good work on this project.

And cant wait to see this movie as well, as I am a big fan of movies from wow in general as well... :)

Cider, great work! So fun to finally see this! With out a doubt, the most exciting raid cinematic I seen to date. Congrats on a job well done!

BTW- the shot of the Pig, MC'd and caught in a cyclone on KT, is epic! Looks like KT cast Guardian Spirit on himself there, too...that is awesome!

I love the random continuity errors from you shifting between multiple fight recordings, there's nothing wrong with it... but it's still funny to see something change in half of a second. The Sapphiron fight for example, a dwarf warrior is standing in front of him for the intro and it suddenly shifts to a feral druid tanking him.

Same encounters on the same run, just unexpected deaths. This was for the 20-man achievement to finish out our Heroic: Glory of the Raider and -- as the best geared tank -- I was effectively dead weight because I was recording. A couple encounters, you see a Feral Druid pick him up (ManBearPig) because he was quick when the previous tank died. :)

I was wondering how you did the camera panning. At first I thought you did that in the game, but then I read that you used Adobe.

Inspired me to finish a little raid video I was making for my guild.

Watched it earlier in low-res, it is *definitely* worth watching again in hi-def.

When you take away all the UI mess and the technical stuff you have to pay attention to in the guides, you can really appreciate how pretty this game is.

Also, I might just start looking at Cider's system specs instead of porn, holy crap!

Just WoW. Awesome work, Ciderhelm. I've been using your videos as a teaching point for the group of friends I run thru Naxx on a weekly basis. I run w/ my guild on 25 mans, but not all of my friends can be hardcore raiders, and I want to run with them, too. This way, everyone raids, and we have a relaxed raid on the weekend.

I've recommended them to guilds that are just beginning to raid, and believe me, they do make a difference.

Great video Cider!

..however I hate Proto Drakes. The scene you have them all walking around makes me think of a disease and plagued tower taken over by the evil that Malygos stated humans were. >.> Go figure I'd think of something in that fashion. But great editing and movie all together. I just found that part kinda ironic heh

I should have made a comment earlier when I first watched and forced all my roommates to watch but then I probably wouldn't have thot back to how much the project helped me to know all of these fights like the back of the hand. Thanks for enabling me to be considered a good tank. =D

It goes without saying, but really incredible video that does a lot to show how much artistic quality is put into the raids that many of us take for granted.

What's the point in having an SSD only with Vista64+WoW ?
Why not having a separate partition on you main HDD ?
Just asking cause i'm thinking about buying a new system =)

Just asking cause i'm thinking about buying a new system =)

separate partition on the same drive will not increase (comparing to seperate drive) I/O performance.

SSD can do many more operations per sec, bandwidth/Throughput is variable depending on price you pay

Seek times are close to 1ms, scsi about 5ms, sata/ide 11-16
(it is like broadband with 50ms ping comparing to 250ms for scsi, or 600ms for sata/ide)

now divide 1 sec with those times with those times you will know how many read operations they can handle.

Ciderhelm
02-25-2009, 04:31 AM
The SSD is not designed to write large amounts of data with the efficiency of a normal disk, which is also important to know. World of Warcraft does zero writing to the hard drive until you log out of the game, so as a program it gets the most benefit from being run on an SSD. Everything it does is stored in the RAM. I'd recommend against using most programs w/ this setup.

Another thing to note, per video performance: WoW does not benefit from multiple GPUs. The Nvidia GTX 285 is the most powerful WoW card on the market simply because it's the most powerful single GPU card. More expensive SLI or dual-chip setups aren't as good if you're focusing primarily on WoW.

Nereme
The WoW UI forums have information on playing specific sound files through the game, and Curse has a mod which makes it easy to find and use the sounds you're looking for.

Alternatively, you can open the MPQ file up with a reader, which is a bit easier but naturally riskier since you're relying on freeware software.

This is the best video i have ever seen in my history. I am in high school about to graduate and my senior project is going to be a cinematic video about wow. My guild has everything cleared for lich king right now. I make alot of videos like this for my video game club on wow raids but not as good as your cinematic. So if you can give me some pointers, will be much apricieated. None of my videos are up on any site i keep them to myslef. upset for one which was my guilds first kill of malygos which was awsome with one person alive but i didnt feel like spending forever like editing so i did a normal and this was on my laptop which gave me epic fps lag cause its not a good laptop. So if youc can send me some of the stuff you used and the stuff you used for this video including song and other stuff you use like to edit it plz send it to slayer-1234@live.com Thanks and much apprieciated

All of the videos here dealing with the raid encounters and even the ones dealing with the obtainment of heroic achievments are well created and extremely insightful. I look forward to seeing how you will top this when Ulduar is released.

Congrats on your video being posted on WoW Insider! The Daily Quest: Of Healing UIs, BlizzCon galleries and Glory of the Raider The Movie (http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/03/04/the-daily-quest-of-healing-uis-blizzcon-galleries-and-glory-of/)
I'm happy when anyone gets a chance to see the work that otherwise might not have, so it's good to see it being linked in a variety of places. I'm also happy to see several blog sites, including the one listed, have been embedding the movie. :)

However, Wowinsider isn't a casual blogging site. For a site of their size to continue lacking basic quality standards is unusual. If they're going to embed a flagship movie I'd appreciate if they acknowledged the source.

According to them, this video is a killshot video

Clearly they didn't even watch it before linking

Excellet job Ciderhelm and Eventide, and shame on wowinsider

Gorgeous, its all i can say.. The video was Blizzard quality trailer.. If u could go back in time and submit it to Blizzard with just the nax part, it could have been a side trailer lol. Thats how good it is. if u guys could jump on ptr and do a video of the same quality for Uldaar and submit it to Bliz, i'm sure they would make it into a trailer..

once again beast of a movie, looking forward to more

ps. how many people actually went on that flight with all the drakes? it was like pigeons on a power line lol

LONG time reader and watcher of your videos and a HUGE fan thanks for everything that has been and for what is comming. You shouldnt be surprised really Cider you and your guild SHOULD be on top of the youtube-rating. I am quite sure you have helped more than a couple solving things in raids with your videos and this one is just a beauty. I watch these vidoes over and over again to help me do better every week in Naxx. You are an inspiration and i tell everyone i know that plays to go to this page cause its nothing short of amasing. And the fact that noobs like myself can get answears on the questions we have without getting yelled at or called an idiot is just great no one should be afraid to ask what ever they want to know cause there a alot of people here wanting to help and have the knowledge to do so. So thanks again and grats on the rating/rank.
Looking forward to your next videos.

The WoW UI forums have information on playing specific sound files through the game, and Curse has a mod which makes it easy to find and use the sounds you're looking for.

Alternatively, you can open the MPQ file up with a reader, which is a bit easier but naturally riskier since you're relying on freeware software.

I have spent a good hour or two in both the forums and curse tryign to find what you are referencing. I have come up empty handed, does anyone have a link or know the name of the addon cider is talking about?

This is an amazing video. The most I can do with Fraps is take movies without my interface. This is a wonderful display of filming and editing.

How do you export the character's speeches out from WoW? WinMPQ? If so, what file are the voices / speech located at?

Ciderhelm, I think of you and I want to /bow. Incredible man, truly a work of art. I was trying to do the same for my guild as a little preview of Naxx/Ulduar raiding. I decided to leave it to the pro's and just appreciate yours =)

I loved this movie. It brought back so many memories of our own raids. :) I absolutely love all your guides and videos and constantly tell my guildies to watch your videos before coming on our raids (though many of them don't :(). Keep up the great work, so RLs like me can better understand the fights and make it easier for others to know what to do.

if you can go to youtube and watch the video, than you should be able to see it here, it's simply an embedded video from youtube. Flash disabled?

Zzeeuuss
05-16-2010, 03:31 AM
Also if you are running on a 64 bit OS like myself - there is no flash available for this as of yet, it's still in the beta testing.

However don't fear! Just go and download a 32bit browser as it will still work perfectly :)
