How do you get that nifty little widget that shows your characters below your name on the forum? tried to find it somewhere in the control panel

Control panel -> Edit your details

Insert " US or EU|Server|Alliance or Horde|Character name " in the world of warcraft characters box.

Ie, US|Alleria|Alliance|Zerok
