View Full Version : Paladin Gear Suggestions

Hello Everyone,

I have been reading over a lot of the threads on Prot Paladins doing heroics, and I have been working on getting my 490 defense (right now 489, but waiting on exalted with Scryers to solve that little problem). And have been working very hard on my Avoidance. But when I attempt to even think about tanking any heroics, ie. Slave Pens.

When I walked in I prepared for the first pull and the three mobs proceeded to hand my backside to me. I couldn't believe it, usually 1-2k hits and I was out like a light. Having seen that we quickly dropped the heroics and went to Shattered Halls for a much easier run. I have been following the guides on how to gear a paladin for tanking Kara and Heroics, and I am just at a loss for words on what I should do.

If anyone has any suggestions at all on what I could do, or need to do to finally get to the point I won't be getting hammered on I would love to hear them. It's very frustrating when the only thing I am able to do is get creamed. Or even where I need to start with Heroics, I heard Slave Pens and Mech were the easiest of them all, but even getting hammered in them doesn't exactly get me too excited for anything.

Let's start with your gems, I really hope you're not tanking with Seal of Blood, so there's no reason to have +12 AP and the +6 def rating in your shoulder is off to. If I had to guess, you might not have known that you can put any gem in any slot, and rarely is it worth the effort to get a socket bonus. There are exceptions, but you can't go wrong just putting + Stam gems in every slot.

Your enchants could use some work too, for the head piece, get a Glyph of the Defender (Glyph of the Defender - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29186)). Shoulders ok, if you're worried about Defense Rating, get Steelweave (Formula: Enchant Cloak - Steelweave - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=35756)) on your cloak, I'm not a fan of +8 def on the chest piece. Personally, I think +150 health or +6 all stats is better. I do understand you have some gearing to do, but no Stam enchant on your nice purple shield? For shame.

As for your gear, I strongly recommend running Botanica and getting the Righteous Shoulders off of Laj. It will suck, I know. It took me 20+ runs to get them. Also run Steamvaults for the Righteous Chest and the Devilshark Cape off of the last boss Kalithress. There are blue tanking bracers from a Shadow Labyrinth dungeon quest (The Soul Devices - Quest - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10091)). Your sword is wrong, even if it is enchanted with +40 SD, look for the Crystalforged Sword (Crystalforged Sword - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32660)on) the AH or the Continuum Blade (Continuum Blade - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29185)from) Keepers of Time quartermaster. The KoT Quartermaster also has Tanking legplates that are better than what you are wearing.

I really dislike your rings, sorry. There's a nice tanking one that drops in Arcatraz. Above all else, lose the Ring of the Silver Hand. It's bad. Here's a list of all the Blue rings that have tank stats on them (Rings - Items - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?items=4.-2&filter=qu=3;minle=100;maxle=199;cr=42;crs=1;crv=0) )

To be honest, you need to run a lot more normal 5 mans. You have a lot of quest reward blues which aren't going to hold up in a heroic. It's pretty hard to AOE tank a heroic unless you have a gear advantage or a great healer.

Thank you for all your advice! And I took a lot of your suggestions and made a long laundry list full of items I need to work for in instances and rep. At last count I have 10 items I need to work for, although I have found the Crystalforged Sword so that chops one off the list. And trust me, there are 2 rings on the list, and I have decided against all sanity that I am going to level both Jewelcrafting and Engineering... as crazy as it sounds for the epic tanking piece from Engineering as well as all the benefits that Jewelcrafting has to offer.

And thank you a lot for your tips about the Gems, I have to admit I was completely lost on them, but I have since swapped out some of them for better Gems, at least of what I could afford. And for the shield, I know its no stamina yet hehe. I only JUST bought it this morning, so I have just been happy to have it lol. I will definately be working towards getting everything I possibly can to help make my journey easier!

Thanks again for all the help between here and the wow forums I have learned some very valuable things for tanking with my Paladin. Once again thanks, and <3!

Hello Everyone,

I would just like to get a little update in on my gearing, as you can see I have made some pretty good jumps I think over what I previously was geared with. I am wandering if I could get some more feedback on what I need to change, the shoulders I know I still need to switch on, the gloves I am trying to get Thatia's Self-Correcting Gauntlets, haven't been able to pick them up. And in light of the Elementium Band a guild mate was nice enough to sell the Band of Impenetrable Defense to me for a very nice price. I think on those shoulders for now I am going to slap in some more +12 Stamina gems for another boost.

Thanks for your replies!
