This is my first post here, although I've been a reader for awhile now.

The S4 arena gear was put up on the PTR finally, and the first thing I looked at was the [Brutal Gladiator's Shield Wall] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=35094).

Assuming the def/res is not an issue, which is more valuable?

2%/2000 armor proc from [Bulwark of Azzinoth (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32375)] the worth more than the constant 328 armor, 11 block, and 70hp?

Brutal Gladiator's Shield Wall
6662 Armor
185 Block
67 Stamina
31 Resillience

Bulwark of Azzinoth
6336 Armor
174 Block
60 Stamina
29 Defense
2% chance to increase armor by 2000 for 10 seconds

The armour proc is pretty minor, but 29 defense is a solid 1.5% avoidance. I'm not sure if it's enough to make up for the huge boost in armour, health, and block value.

S4 is slightly better imo. But Im not totally sure how good that proc is.

Would that make it the best shield outside of Sunwell?

Analyzing the bulwark proc:

I just typed up a whole long analysis involving the mob's attack speed to calculate uptime, and then I read that there's a 1min hidden cooldown. The maximum uptime is 16.666...%, or passive armor of 333. That's the theoretical maximum, but it is more likely to be 10% uptime (brutallus would probably be higher).

The S4 is clearly the better choice for EH and for threat. I'd wear the bulwark for the "yo i killed illidan" coolness factor, and for avoidance fights. Maybe for a fight when I'm worried about spike damage, since I'd prefer a chance at 2k armor than a constant 328 armor.

We did a 6/9 clear of BT last night. In 1:09 of in combat time, the shield proced 4 times. To compare, he got 15 Hyjal ring procs, and 85 mongoose procs.

But this shield is HAWT too...

Also, what will be the rating requirement? wow-champion states that off-hands will have no requirement.... but that's different than S3, right?

I'm assuming that's 1h9mins, based on the number of mongoose and hyjal procs you listed, and not in 1min.

That number does seem low, though. Is this just on trash? On just bosses? Was he MTing? On a mob hitting once every 2 seconds, at 60% avoidance, you'd expect to be hit every 3.33secs. At a 2% proc rate, that's a proc every 166secs, or every 2min46secs.

If he's averaging 4 procs over 1:09, that's one proc every 17min15secs. Either there's a much longer hidden cooldown, or he wasn't getting hit.

The Season 3 Shields had rating requirements the same as Weapons, so this Shield should require 2050 Personal and Team rating to purchase. None of the items on the PTR with requirements are showing them right now.

So what about:

The new Season 4 items will have the below personal and team arena rating requirements:
Shoulders: 2200
Weapon: 2050
Head: 1700
Chest: 1600
Legs: 1550
Gloves: none
Off-hand: none

Is the Shield a weapon then, and not an Off-Hand?

The shield requires 2050 team and personal rating. The rating requirements are now on the PTR.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to see how bloody huge it is (which is why I posted the picture). Shame I'll never own one :(

The Shield is considered a Weapon for rating purposes. Off-hands are mostly caster oriented.

Now that shield really deserve the "Shield Wall" name. As a gnome, I want one. You all know why.

Goddamn, finally an update to the arena shield, too bad 2050 is even beyond my 1900 rated team =(

And it will be even more difficult to get in S4 as it was in S3, since the ratings requirements on legs/head/chest will keep most casual arena players from playing in S4, and ELO ratings are a zero-sum situation. Less crappy people playing = lower ratings for everyone.

I'd be surprised if I saw more than one or two tanks in a raiding guild wearing an S4 shield.

I don't mind though, it brings me back to the days of the ranks, Those who commit the time will get the gear.

offhand requires no rating in s4. so potentially the shield could be a little freebie gift to tanks.

There's a screenshot somewhere of the s4 shield requiring a 2050 rating, i believe...

So what you're telling a "just about to break into ZA"-tank like me is that my Arena points need to go towards this to replace my Shield of Impenetrable Darkness?

If you can get a 2050 personal and team rating, do it. However, I highly doubt most tanks will get there.

See my earlier post in this thread for the screenshot. Cider also reposted it to the front page.

Impenetrable Darkness is a great shield for ZA. Lots of tanks go into TK and SSC with Impenetrable Darkness.

Grab the shield off the Dragonhawk boss while you're in ZA and you'll be fine. Grab the whole ZA and 2.3 badge set and you'll look either like a tribal bird god of death (if you're Tauren) or like you've just stumbled out of some crazy Halloween party (if you're not Tauren). Save your arena points for either the S3 or 4 chest.
