How important is melee hit rating to a protection paladin? Do they really need to consider it a priority over other tanking stats, ie SBV and avoidance.

Melee hit affects our threat in a very low quantity, since it basically only increases the chance of hitting (and thus getting the SoR proc).

Not worth stacking. Good to have, but never sacrifice hp, spelldam or avoidance for it.

Melee hit also affects the hit chance of Avenger's Shield and Righteous Defense... so as Worldie says, it's nice to have a little.

so spell dmg > hit rating?

would the trash drop shield from Hyjal/BT be better for a prot pally over the hardened heart in hyjal?

Hyjal trash drop shield is for extra threat. Hardened heart is better for survivability.

Melee hit is a good thing, especially on encounters where you'll need to taunt. I wouldn't dare do Brutallus without being at the hit cap.

It's worth noting that as you get into T6 content you can acquire hit rating on gear in slots that normally don't have threat stats - e.g., ring, cloak, and neck and still maintain your defensive goals.
