View Full Version : AE tanking items?

Hi, long-time lurker, first time poster here.

I know for warriors there aren't many options for AE tanking, and that warriors aren't the best class to AE tank, but there are instances where we don't have a paladin to tank a bunch of trash mobs, so I'm forced to do so. I'm trying to find other items that would increase my TPS against multiple targets.

So far I have
Petrified Lichen Guard
Felsteel Shield Spike
Darkmoon Card: Vengeance
These items coupled with a 2% threat enchant on gloves (for TClap/DemoShout, as well as the damage from these items).

On top of those items I'm wearing my max TPS set to try and keep threat on as many mobs as I can through tabbing targets. Can anyone else think of any items that might help with AE pulls?

Thanks!

Shortly after leveling my Eng skill for the purpose of the 45 stamina trinket, I remembered that I'd always wanted a Force Reactive Disk. This shield will hit all surrounding mobs with the damage, not just the one that you blocked; it's weakness is that in long fights, it will break. :( I usually whip it out for inciter's room in H-SL if we're running without crowd control, and I've been told that my aoe threat using this, TC, Battle Shout (causes more spread threat than demo and doesn't decrease your damage taken, if you're looking for rage to deal more threat), Cleave, and Darkmoon Card: Vengeance rivals that of a Paladin at times.

Using Figurine of the Colossus when you have half health will cause blocking to lead to some pretty awesome healing aggro.

Eat Stormchops - warning they will break sheep

Oh yeah, I forgot all about Stormchops. I've got 2 stacks of those as well!

I'm getting a Force Reactive Disk made today. Thanks for that tip. I'll probably keep the Petrified Lichen Guard just in case the other shield breaks.

Does anyone use these techniques for Solarian adds? I've also been collecting a set to try and tank them. Yesterday we were sans prot pally and I had a holy pally try it and he was completely unable to prevent mage/warlock deaths, even with a 5-second headstart and an intim short/roar queue.

Engineering FTW. I hope that Blizz will eventually come out with an update for the Force Reactive Disk, as it could use a version that carries more than 120 durability. Statistically, less 240 blocks will break it, and though it grants excellent threat output, its lifespan is very short. I'm actually considering getting another one crafted.

As far as I know, Petrified Lichen Guard is not unique. So you could buy multiple to AoE farm without taking as many breaks to repair. I have yet to leave Shadowmoon to go see if I can buy another.

EDIT: I wasn't reading all that comprehensively... Tanking versus Farming.

I just posted this in another thread, but

The Un'goro Crystals have some interesting applications.

Crystal Spire is essentially half the damage of Thorns, but the same principle. Of course, you still have to be hit for them to reflect damage.

I found that I had difficulties using Crystal Charge so that it actually hit multiple targets back when I tried, but it's still nice to generate aggro on a mob out of melee range if you can't move (as long as it's 15 yards range, of course).

That's a really good point. I've never thought about that.

I use Essence of the Pure Flame which I picked up back in the old MC days. :) Also Figurine of the Colossus... for higher block rating and healing aggro. Plus an alternate shield for Felsteel Spike, Thorns aura and Ret. aura if I can get it. I also equip a slower weapon for harder hitting cleaves. And then the mage still rips aggro off of me in about 3-4 sec. :)

If you have an extra weapon that has good threat, try putting battlemaster on it for AOE healing aggro. Example-I have a Mallet of the Tides - Items - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30058) for threat against bosses, and a The Sun Eater - Items - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29362) for rare avoidance tanking. I could pop battlemaster on a King's Defender - Items - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28749) (although it never dropped for me after 5 or 6 months of Kara) or what ever extra weapon I have for an AOE weapon. Another trick for tanking content you might be a little overgeared for, like heroic SH if youre in tier 5 stuff or whatever. Using cooldowns is very nice for AOE tanking/speedy runs. For that big pull in hero SH, I use a demo shout/T-clap, switch to battle/ cast retaliation, back to def stance, tab-sunder and watch the sparks fly. I usually do this if Im going for the timed run to save time. :D ( PS, sorry for the less than ideal linking, I read threads a lot more than I post)

This quest (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=706) rewards you another possibility for enchanting the weapon. Alliance only though. Anyone know whether it'll make a BoE item bind?

There are a few lvl60 items that have thorns-like damage and some others with an aoe damage use effect. I guess a couple of slots could be given to these without sacrificing too much.

Cloak of Fire (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=14134) - easy to get (the recipe has a high drop chance) and maybe good with the short cooldown and "high" damage for a short time.

Cloak of Flame (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=3475) - another option for cloak. Passive damage reflection but for a pretty small amount.

Fetish of Chitinous Spikes (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=21488) - AQ20 trinket

Mark of Conquest (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27920) and the lvl60 Darkmoon faire card "Heroism" might work for generating some healing aggro.

Others: Naglering, Demonforged Breastplate, Razor Gauntlets, Thunderfury

Has anyone tried putting a gear together for doing this. What sort of results did you have? It would be useful to finding out what items out of the ones mentioned in this thread have the potential for most threat generation and what kind of rate we could expect with a good setup to really know how viable is this. The idea is certainly fascinating. :)

Not sure if it would be better then a level 70 weapon enchant but you can always try: Fiery Blaze Enchantment
