L80 Pre-Naxx guide - http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/40966-polar-s-easy-pre-naxx-tank-gear-list.html#post120124

Just hit level 70 and want to quickly gear up for tanking duties in Karazhan or heroics? Don't want to run 5-man instances over and over hoping for just 1 item to drop?

Here is a list of some of the better L70 pre-Karazhan plate tank gear that you can get by simple questing, the AH or reputation rewards up to 'revered'.

Please note: This is not the "ultimate" pre-raid tanking guide - It excludes gear that drops from bosses in the 5 man runs since such drops are random and often require many runs of the same instance to obtain such gear. It also excludes epic crafted gear and gear that requires exalted faction rep. This guide is the "easy-to-get" gear guide to start tanking heroics and Karazhan.

The aim of the items is to increase stamina, defense, dodge/parry and armor. 490 defense is the target value to minimize crit chance against you. Once you hit 490 you should be aiming for a good balance between armor, stamina and avoidance (dodge+parry). From a threat generation perspective, block value will come naturally with the gear you collect but if you find your miss rate a little high then you may want to consider substituting in some +hit rating gems. The head, chest, legs and shield contribute most to the tanking stats so aim to get these sorted above all else. 12k armor, 12k health and 30% dodge+parry is a good target for entry-level Karazhan.

Recommended green quality jewels are Shifting Shadow Draenite (red slots), Thick Golden Draenite, Enduring Deep Peridot and Rigid Golden Draenite (yellow slots) and Solid Azure Moonstone (blue slots). Remember that you do not have to match the jewel color to the slot color and you only give up the socket bonus if you take this approach. Suggested gems are shown as a guide only for each socketable item. Better quality gems are recommended if you can afford them.

*Highly recommended items - generally better than 5-man instance boss drops

Let's get some feedback on this from the membership. In the future, this will probably be turned into a webpage similar to:
TankSpot - Warcraft Warrior's Reference - Armstrong Devastate FAQ (http://tankspot.com/index.php?pageid=ArmstrongDevastate)

I may jump in there and do some formatting before I make this change. I won't edit any information, just the format of the post for readability on a lighter background (for instance, the separator lines).

I suggested this to him on the US-WoW forums since he was getting flamed there for not including 5man drops. I think this can be incorporated into a "So You've hit 70, Now what?"

Kinda to pick up after Of Steel, but before Fortifications.

It would've helped me tons when I was trying to gear up for heroics.

Looks like a pretty good list, though the Netherwing trinket is harder (in my opinion) to get than a lot of 5 man things. That's probably because I've never been much good at making money though, heh.

Yeah, I don't think the Netherwing one is all that easy to get.

Other than that, great list!

Also might wanna mention the Scryer Gloves - Revered. Those are pretty good. Although I see you completing the Felsteel set...

This list is great. I think I had just about all that gear at one point.

The only thing I would add is Natasha's Neck thingy.

-- Constructive feedback --

First and all, excellent work, this strategy of going crafted items+quest items indeed rocks.

I have myself, last week, done a similar job. I took Berg's Tanking Gear guide and extracted the easiest gear I could get from quests/reputation/crafted
items. I took it to word, printed the 33 pages of it, and studied.

The result is EXTREMELY close to your guide.

I reached lvl 70 with my set ready to go, 498 defense and 10.5k HP unbuffed.

Some advice/criticism/comments:

1) I recommend this guide to everybody before they are 70, since questing for the items will help you level as well

2) Felsteel set: Don't overpay neither buy the materials, other people levelling blacksmith from 350-375 will often sell them at AH cheap, helm and gloves for 18-35g, and leggings can be acquired for around 50g. Check wowecon for prices of your server.

3) Cloak of Eternity: check often for people with this recipe, its not something tailors usually seek to acquire, therefore the plans for it aren't as popular as the felsteel set and you could have trouble finding a tailor that can do this.

4) Reputation items: That is still a problem to me, I don't know which faction to focus on. On your list, and on mine also, there are several factions that you need to be revered to get good items from: Aldors (or scryers), Keepers of Time, Ogri'la, Cenarium Expedition, Netherwing. And we know that Shat'tar offers a super shield at exalted, and HH offers a good tanking weapon at Exalted too. I have not developed any reputation with any faction beyond honored, therefore I don't have access to any item on your list, I use the alternatives. I don't know which to focus first, do you have a suggestion for that?

5) Aggro management and 490 defense: Since the items are weak individually, you have to spend too much slot space and gems with defense rating. I don't have access to +12 defense enchantments (no reputation). Since there's no room for strength and block value in this set, I have trouble keeping agro, and other players recognize that, and this is a trouble because people benchmark you bad if you lose aggro frequently, and yes, I'm using the correct rotation...

The thing is, the set above has to much items with just stamina and defense, and not strength. I know that doing Kara I will get items with more +defense rating individually and will be able to free some slots to aggro items. What is your experience with that?

Some of my own ideas to fix this problem:

(a) replacing some slots with PvP items (honor-bought) that provide strength, and slotting +defense rating gems on them. I think bracer and boots are good candidates. When those item are replaced I just re-gem them to use in my pvp gear set.

(b) replacing some slots with strength items and compensate stamina/defense with expensive gems in other slots. Rings and trinkets are good candidates.

(c) Farming a Sun Eater straightaway from mech and mech heroic: It's a tradeoff, I don't get revered with anything any time soon, don't get any revered enchants, but going this path not only I'll get a superb weapon, but I will be also working towards the sha'tar shield. Needless to say sword+shield are the foundations of the tank. This strategy is what I'm doing, what do you think about it? Do you think the sun eater itself will go a long way into improving threat generation?

(d) Going swordsmith and craft something: I think it could be a good alternative, but I'm not sure, haven't studied this path as I'm not following it (gonna be hammersmith -- thunde/deep thunder for pvp)

Best wishes, hope this guide lives long and I'm sure it will be useful to many tanks like me who are just starting and wanna reach the benchmarks for karazhan *as fast as possible*.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement! I know my guildies have found the guide invaluable so I am glad to hear that it might have further appeal.

I will take all the suggestions on board and look at some enhancements to the list.

I attempted to avoid items that would take a lot of time/effort to achieve. This is why I have excluded and rep rewards that require exalted status. I agree that the Netherwing Commander's Badge might be a bit too much a of a stretch for the guide (given you really need an epic flyer to get the quests for the rep) so I will consider removing it.

Let me sleep on it :)

And yes, Brain, awesome response mate!

Reputation Items - If I were to proritize reputation gains, I would go Aldor and aim for revered as soon as possible. The Vindicator's Hauberk is a very nice chest piece for tanking. 2nd, CE revered is not that difficult to hit since the general questing in Zangarmash gets you most of the way there. The strenght of the untamed neck piece is a nice CE rep reward. Sha'tar exalted gets you a nice shield (not listed) and is also nice to aim for if you have the time to get the rep.

Lack of strength and block value - I appreciate that some of the items have little in this regard but a few of them are not too bad. Myrmidon's Headdress, Warchief's Mantle, Sha'tari Armguards, Girdle of the Lost Vindicator and Sha'tari Wrought Greaves all have some strength. Some others have some block value as well. The guide also assumes you will be doing some 5-man runs to get rep for heroic keys so you are bound to pick up a few more goodies along the way. Also, most of the early bosses in Kara drop some great tanking epic upgrades so you tend to gear up quickly once you get started in there.

If anyone has other suggestions or other experiences then let us know.

Some more feedback on easy reputation that gives good gear:

I followed Polar's advice, started with Aldor revered reputation. Got my excellent chest piece as well as the +16 dodge shoulder enchant, very good advice. I didn't farm, I got a loan with a friend and spent 200g on marks of sargeras, if you buy in large quantities you get better price per unit (50s in my case)

Then I went for Karazhan attune, and with the quest chains at Caverns of Time, I got plenty of rewards, and it's pretty easy to do, I strongly recommend, do it as soon as possible.

The chain itself gives you Warchief's Mantle Thottbot World of Warcraft: Warchief's Mantle (http://www.thottbot.com/i29316) which is a good shoulder piece if don't have any better, and completing Black Morass gives you either Andormu's Tear (Thottbot World of Warcraft: Andormu's Tear (http://www.thottbot.com/i29323)) or Time-bending Gem (Thottbot World of Warcraft: Time-bending Gem (http://www.thottbot.com/i29321))

You get to honored with Keepers of Time just by doing the quests and with just 4-5 more runs of either Durnholde or BM you can achieve revered and get the superb helm enchant with +17 dodge and +16 defense, as well as the Timewarden's Leggings which are equivalent overall to Felsteel but allows you to go much higher in stamina if you prefer.

Hey guys, great guide, i was able to nab a few peices that really helped me alot from the work here. One question though, what would be the recommended ranged weapon for a new tank starting Karazhan, i've been using greens i find that give me stam and i'm working for the Gyro-balenced Khorium destroyer. But as it stands now i'd like to get a blue in there until then, any suggestions? :)

To be honest, I think the greens you get off the AH are superior to the blue ranged weapons out there. You can get * of stamina or * of the monkey that give far better tanking stats.

The Khorium Drestroyer is the ultimate weapon but costs a small fortune to craft. Go for the AH greens in the meantime.

I found a guy that crafted one for me for 150g nether fee. Took me about 12 hours playing time to farm or buy the mats. Since I herb, did most of it killing Bog Lords in Zanga and got my rep up to boot, so I could buy transmute earth to air. Total cost was right around 1000g. Worth every copper IMO.

The best thing was, skilling this thing up. Took it to Elwynn and one shotted about 200 Defias. Revenge is sweet :). The animation is awesome and it's a blast whipping it out in front of your PUG for the first time in a dungeon.

Great list - using it to gear up atm (Armory (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bronze%20Dragonflight&n=Algernon) - current progress, some rubbish in slots i know).

One omission for your list and Berg's list too I can't quite figure out is the Adamantite Breastplate (http://eu.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=23507). I understand it doesn't have any +def, and getting 490 is (for me) the biggest problem with pre-kara gear - but the stamina you can hit with gems (+76) puts it (well above - edit) around the same as Vindicator's Hauberk (http://eu.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=29127)for Tankpoints for me. Does it drop off in points as other gear is improved? Also, the str bonus (for threat generation) seems helpful to me - I'm not using it right now, but keeping it for tanking instances with PuGs that need a bit of extra healing space.

I feel like stacking all this avoidance to hit 490 i'm going to lose threat and effective health. Oh well, new gear will solve all my problems I expect!

OldHarry
09-05-2007, 06:06 AM
YES! I have the same question with the Adamantite Breastplate. Been using it for a while and I don't understand why it's not on the list. It's cheap, easily attainable, and customizable. A great all around piece IMO. Why no love for Adamantite?

Polar
09-09-2007, 09:45 PM
I looked at the Adamantite Breastplate for the list but discounted it because I considered the Breastplate of the Warbringer to be slightly superior and fairly easy to obtain. The quest to obtain this is the three person "Forge Camp: Annihilated" quest in Netherstrom.

The Breastplate of the Warbringer has good stamina, a very good chunk of defence (which helps with hitting that 490 mark) and the added bonus of threat-generating +30 hit rating.

I recognise that the +34 strength on the Adamantite piece is nice, but I would not trade it out for the +31 defense of the warbringer piece. I know you could socket it up with Stam gems or Avoidance gems but I still don't think it would overtake the Warbringer.

Happy to hear your thoughts.

You are well on the way. Just a bit more defense and stamina and you will be looking great!

Try a couple of the rings with +defense on them and also the Glyph of the Defender enchant for your helm.

Thx Polar - working on it all, slowly! This gear list is getting me up towards 490 def & decent EH (I hope) - and since we haven't started Kara yet, everything is progression!

But, for instances (just starting heroics soon), aggro is still an issue since i've got almost no +hit on my "best" gear. I've collected a load of gear with +hit +crit +str etc, but if I load up on that my HP drops to <9k and I'll be laughed out of a heroic instance!

So, my question is - what do you recommend for a decent aggro set at the pre-kara stage? Or should I ignore it for now, concentrate on progression & resocket some of this stuff for +hit when it gets old?

You know, I once thought that an aggro set was the ultimate answer to lots more threat in 5-man instances and then I discovered the Threat Per Second spreadsheet : here (http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t11634-warrior_tanking_tps_sheet/)

I plugged my values into the spreadsheet and found to my surprise that getting my threat generation rotations right gave me a far bigger increase in TPS than any gear would do.

So the moral of my tale is download the spreadsheet, put your stats in, and have a play to see what things contribute most to TPS.

You will probably find that getting the right combination of heroic strikes, shield slams, revenges and devastates will go a long way to giving you the increase you seek. If you are skilled enough to have this sorted already, consider gathering a "block value" tanking set to add DPS and threat to your shield slams. Swap into this for trash or low hurt fights and then switch back to your full tanking gear for big boss fights.

You could also consider swapping out some tanking gear for a little DPS gear to get you doing a bit more damage and also allowing you to get hit harder and build more rage.

Happy to hear from others if they have any other suggestions.

Thanks for the link!

The thing I like most about +hit is that when you click something you want to reliably work, there's a greater chance it will work. For instance if there's a caster about ready to heal something or blast something hard, you do not want your Shield Bash or Conc Blow to fail.

So +hit is not just about threat generation, it's also about reliability/consistency. That's sort of hard to measure mathematically.

Of course, I went for the 490 defense before the +hit. I'm not sure if this was the correct order to do things in or not but that's what I did. Prior to getting my +hit, I relied a lot on Improved Taunt and found that I had to use it quite a bit. Now, not so much.

But yeah, the biggest improvement to threat generation that is free, is always using your highest aggro generating talents.

490 defense is absolute priority, a dead Tank is worth nothing.

Polar - thx for the link - I've put off looking at this because it's a complicated sheet & I don't entirely understand it! Also, it seems more geared towards unlimited rage raid bosses than the trash mob situations i'm mostly talking about atm. I'm putting my stats in now & will see what I get.

Brain - For particular & maybe all raid bosses, where a tank can be 1-2 shotted by crits, then zeroing that chance by getting 490 def is an absolute I agree.

At least for running through trash mobs in regular or heroic instances, a crit is not nearly so likely to cause a wipe (with exceptions I know, but i'm talking in most cases). For those parts of an instance run dropping some def seems acceptable to me if it gives a significant benefit elsewhere. That said, those trash mobs are also unlikely to cause the group significant problems if you do miss an interrupt or shield slam.

Kazeyonoma

in heroics, trash kills clothies.

a crit will kill a tank most of the time as well since reactive healing still is the method in heroics.

i get regular hit for 4k sometimes by heroic trash, crit would be 8k. if that doesn't cause wipes, then you must be an uber tank, or tauren.

Sadly I'm neither - point taken. I'll be holding on to my 490 def as recommended!

09-20-2007, 04:00 AM
In heroics you don't need 490 def. Remember that there is no lvl 73 mobs in heroics so their crit chance is still above 5% but slight lower than bosses.

Hello,

I think that Jade-Skull Breastplate (http://thottbot.com/?s=Jade+Skull+Breastplate) should be add. Its drop from Nethermancer Sepethrea in Mechanar (15%-24% drop rate) and in my opinion its better then Breastplate of the Warbringer, but of course its only suggestion :)

I know that you exclude boss drop - but I think some of them should be include, why ? Its easy - almost everybody is doing instances like Botanica (here is nice shield Aegis of the Sunbird (http://thottbot.com/i28316)) and Mechanar (a special that one of your items needs to make quest in both of that instances) and truly there is not so many items from boss drop in normal instances for tank. And all instances can be done even with decent eq. And sometime (depends on server) its easier to find party for instance then find ppl to make quest (for example Zuluhed the Whacked) or chain quests (like attune to Ogrilla).

Hi Gottrek,

The point of the guide is to show some a list of gear that does not require repetitive 5-man runs to obtain.

I openly admit that there is some better gear in the 5 man runs and that most tanks will be picking some of their gear up in the course of getting keyed for heroics.

The Jade Skull Breastplate is a nice piece, but it has around a 1 in 6 chance of dropping. On average, you will need to run Mechanar 6 times before you will see it. I ran it 10 or so times and never saw it!

And that is the point of the list. If you want to be geared up for Kara quickly then go for the items on the list. If you happen to get some better drops along the way then good for you. Even if you see no drops from 5 mans, the items on the list will give you sufficient stats to get started in Karazhan.

Hi all.
Finaly got my Sha'tar shield last night, but just wanted to get a confirmation from some old and wise heads about my gear, my question is, am I ready for Kara.
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Aggramar&n=Bamster

I think there is one trinket left for me to get, Dabiri's Enigma. Ignore my spec, I tank with 11/5/45. Am I ready for Kara w/o putting strain on the healers?.

EDIT: My shield is so new I havn't got Solid Stars yet, and I have the crossbow with stamina + defence.
I do have 4/5 Bold Set, missing the leggings. That was going to be one of my other questions, the Bold set seems to have far less defence, but seems more balanced, with Str and Agi, whereas the Felsteel simply has Stamina, how good is the Bold set?

Cheers!.

Getting the pre-requisite quests, doing the group quests and repeating dailies to get the Ogri'la Aegis still takes time, though, if we're talking about getting items that doesn't require repeating things to obtain. ^_^;

Great guide!

Hi there!

Your armor and health are looking great!

You need to concentrate on getting your defense to 490. To help you get this, I recommend going after Dabiri's Enigma from the group quest in Netherstorm. This should get you to 485 defense. You then need to find another 5 points - either swap out some gems for a +def gem or hunt down some of the other +def pieces.

Polar & Readers,

Since the guide denoted that most of the gear you aquire is from level 65 and up I didn't give the guide any attention untill I actually became level 65 :\

One sad note on that is during my leveling in Hellfire I choose the +crit trinket instead of the +def one, and it's bugging me every minute I play my warrior now I feel like I have created a gap that is not easily filled by not paying more attention. Fact is I didn't realise the trinket was available at such a low level quest and that it would turn out to be one of the better items you can get untill you are 70.

Is there another fairly easily attainable +def trinket to replace it with now that I no longer have the option to obtain it? I know my pally friend tank has ran SH 40+ time to get a trinket from there and I'm not looking forward to it, but if there is no other choice :\

I copied your guide to my computer and extended the guide with a minimum level requirement behind each item so I know at what level I need to collect the next batch of items, perhaps you could also do that on your own guide so people know when they are able to obtain one of them and don't repeat my mistakes!

(It seems often people read your guide after they are leveled out of Hellfire a long time and thus not always realise what a great trinket opportunity they passed on :\)

Thanks for your great work and effort in providing the info. I am making your guide into a walkthrough perhaps if it's interesting enough I could post it later on, too busy gearing up at the moment! :-)

Good guide, I had a lot of it before I got to this guide.

Felsteel Leggings are the best all-around till you get Kara drops, honestly.

I would suggest the Gladiator's shield wall when it becomes available for honor, not hard to get now with the dailies.

With my pre-Kara gear I was able to tank some ZA trash for the first boss... not recommended, lol, hit up kara a lot... have patience and you will be rewarded.

Again, good work on the guide.

go for Gladiator's Shield Wall or Crest of the Sha'tar

5 block value and 814 armor VS 0.6% avoidance and 0.2% block

hard choice, i'm still hanging on till the crest, hope i will get lucky on kara shield someday or gruul :P.

This is an excellent guide except for one thing (which is mentioned in some of the comments). It totally ignored the importance of +hit/expertise. I used this guide and got pretty much all the best (or 2nd best) items from it and tried to tank KZ. While we got the first 2 bosses down. I had a RIDICULOUS miss rate on both bosses. I didn't lose aggro on the 2nd boss (thankfully) but Attuneman ran off and killed 2 members of the raid before I could get him back. My suggestion is to substitute some pieces for +hit as anything over 490 defense is really sacrificable to some extent. (Watch your avoidance while doing so though of course). And do the daily cooking quest to get some Hot Spicy Talbuk. It helps SO much.
On a side note, I now use Brooch of Deftness (recommended by Berg's tanking gear guide). It helps SO much to hold aggro.
This guide is great but don't forget that Expertise and Hit are actually the top two threat holding stats. Keep those in mind while farming these till you have a good mix of both.

Hi chengt,

I agree with your comments about a general lack of +expertise and +hit in the gear listed in the guide.

Unfortunately, there is very little gear at that level that has +hit or +expertise. You can get some +expertise from BoJ rewards and +hit can be increased a little with a careful selection of gems but generally there is not much scope for increasing these stats significantly before you step into Kara without hurting your other stats.

BoJ rewards go beyond the intent of this guide but I will add a comment to the guide about considering +hit gems for extra threat generation.

I think the discussion on threat generation is probably best left for another thread but some of the things that go beyond gear stats include (for anyone that is interested):

* Getting your shot rotations right often give you the biggest gains in threat gen - shield slam, revenge, devastate, heroic strike combinations in particular

* Making sure you group with people that know how to manage their threat and are prepared to watch a threat meter - most dps classes have a threat reduction ability

* Getting your latency down - high latency connections actually slow your ability to generate threat, especially with the queuing of heroic strikes

Thanks for your feedback btw.

People still fail to grasp, to a certain degree, why this list is sooo valuable. You get into kara very quickly with it, without depending on droprates.

I followed this guide very closely, along with a 5-man drops guide on the forums list, and it paid huge dividends in terms of getting into Kara. My personal drop rate for plate armor in 5-mans was abyssmal, and this guide got me to the minimums. I got into a Kara group, and picked up 2 tanks pieces my first run.

Since then, I've picked up other drops in instances that had previously eluded me, inlcuding the devilshark cape last night. But without this guide, I'd still be farming instances instead of farming Kara.

EDIT: just realized I responded to something 3 pages ago. /shrug. /sorry

Another item you might want to include, are the gloves from Shattered Halls-Fel embers quest. Just another alternative to felsteel (though I loved mine when I had 'em ) Fel Embers - Quests - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9494)
Dauntless Handguards - Items - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25788#reward-from) With a stamina armor kit or the vindicators for a little more def rating, theyd be fine for going into Kara with. Also, I know this seems to be mostly just easy quest reward gear/craftables, but the gladiator shield is probably one of the easiest gear upgrades a tank going into Kara can make. Even though it is a PVP reward, its probably something most tanks will get much faster than the Ogrila aegis. Like I said, the shield is something people might want to consider including, but if it doesnt fit the outline, forget I said it.

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. Before I get to my question, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to provide this list. For some of us, it is an invaluable source of information.

Now, on to the question. Since I haven't started my pre-req's for Ogri'la rep yet, I've been using the Netherwing Protector's Shield. But last night, Platinum Shield of the Valorous dropped for me. I was wondering if it's a justifiable upgrade or not. I can see that it's an increase in straight up armor, block, stamina, and defense rating, but I'm not sure of the impact of losing dodge % (from agility) and block value from the equip bonus. What should I be drawing a comparison on? Common sense tells me I'm getting more health from the stamina increase than I'm losing from the block value, but is that a fair comparison? Also, should I still go with Major Stamina as an enchant, or would Tough Shield be better?

Thanks in advance.

First of all thanks for the effort that went into this guide. Awesome job. Too bad I found it now, first time. I've spent many hours finding out just about the exact same thing as this guide recommends. Still some new things (as the lvl 61 trinket I've missed :)).

Love to have some feedback on my gear:
Barkskalle at Armory (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Burning+Legion&n=Barkskalle)

A couple of questions:
Should I go for 490 def or boost my stamina? I've heard different things, and right now trying to go for stam (12k hp unbuffed). My def is 472 atm.

I thought I might be ready for Heroics, but tried it 2 times and miserably failed. What's missing? (I know this guide is not for Heroics but I thought it would be a good check on how Kara-ready I was)

There's nothing about resistances here (maybe not needed in Kara) and I've basically went through all the game with 0 resistance, but thinking of getting some gear for that. Neccessary?

Also wondering about shield enchant, why stamina over tough shield?

Grateful for answers, and also if u think I might be anywhere near-ready for Kara (haven't done prequest yet, because I thought I had a loooong way to go)

Also for other tanks reading this who is starting their way to fulfill this list, I deeply recommend you buy the Felsteel set as soon as you can. I bought it a long time ago and I'm still using it. Easiest to get of them all, and not very expensive.
And if you're not 70 where you can start farm rep in Ogri'la, I think there's a shield that drops in SL which is probably easier to get. Or you can do as me and use the one you can buy at AH (Wayward Footman) which looks kinda boring, but it's decent and easy to get.

Once again, great guide. Thanks!

After realising I made the same mistake I browsed around and found the Commander's Badge (http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=32864) which would fit into this list as it is not a drop from an instance, but something you farm rep to get. Nice stamina but no def. There are 2 more items worth grinding for you (and me) one in Mechanar and the other in SL.
This info I found in this very nice guide (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=676668306) which maybe all of you knew about but it was new to me.

Yes indeed. This list is very viable for pally tanks. Obviously you need to strive to be able to push crushings off the attack table as well (which puts a bit more emphasis on avoidance stats and block rating early). Also, the choice of weapon for pally tanks tends to be those that include some more spell damage.

My opinion - they are very close. The Valorous will give you an increase in effective health but the Netherwing will give you a bit more threat generation. Most people would probably go the Valorous, especially if their threat gen seems fine.

Hi,

A lot of the S1 PvP (Gladiator's) gear is quite good. The shoulders, chest and shield are particularly good items.

I have had a quick hack a developing a Loot Rank (http://www.lootrank.com) template for this. Take a look at:

Loot Rank - Warrior Tank (http://www.lootrank.com/wow/rank.asp?Cla=1&Max=10&Slot=0&Gem=3&Art=0&Dif=123&Str=20&Arm=6&Exp=120&mp5=0&Sta=90&Def=108&mcr=20&heal=0&Agi=73&Dod=94&mhit=60&spc=0&Int=0&blv=43&map=10&sph=0&Spi=0&blr=12&fap=0&spd=0&par=75&arp=0&fid=0&Sckm=0&res=0&mh=0&frd=0&dps=200&ard=0&odps=0&nad=0&rdps=0&shd=0&has=0&spp=0)

You can get a feel for the item values across the PvP set.

As for trinkets - the pickings are kind of slim. Best to go for the Adamantine Figurine from Shadow Labs if you can't get any on the list.

First off I just want to say I love the guide ... It is informative and very helpful to tanks just starting out (like me) ... One thing I would like to mention though are the stats you get with this gear ... with the above list I do not think you would be able to tank any heroics above Hellfire or Coilfang ... Here is what I mean:

Dodge:16.99%
Parry: 17.17%
Block: 16.28% (158 block)

Again I am new but I could be wrong ... If I am let me know lol

Kazeyonoma
01-24-2008, 10:55 AM
as long as you get 30% total parry/dodge combined you're probably good enough to tank most heroics and kara, i try to balance around 40% total parry/dodge/miss and the rest goes into my eh and threat, block is inconsequential for tanking stuff unless pushing for uncrushability passively. Don't worry those numbers are awesome infact.

Heartwood

I don't recall seeing the new weapon chain listed for a weapon buff. + to parry could be considered a nice side add-on if a tank is looking for more avoidance.

Excellent list. I feel that you might want to add the Season 1 Arena Shield on the list. Although it lacks any kind of defense or shield block rating, it does provide a huge amount of stam, block, and armor. At 15k honor points and 20 Eye of the Storm marks this shield is easily attainable.

I think this guide is correct for the most part in a realistic aspect, and I appreciate the time and effort that went into it, I don't want to sound ungrateful but I think it needs to be amended.

Why? for the simple fact not even with the best gear of each catergory will you be "allowed" to do an heroic, simple fact is the vast majority of groups will except no less then partial tier 4 geared tank at the least, I have been kicked numerous times from groups not because I caused a wipe or could not hold aggro but because the healer actually had to pay attention and heal proactively, I have been kicked many times soon after my armory profile was looked up.

12k hp 495 defense 13k armor should be more then sufficent, but I have been told numerous time that these are the stats of a scrub tank. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dragonblight&n=Unsurper

Sad I don't have the time right now to farm Kara right now, so therefore my tanking career is at it end....dps demands it weight to be carried at all cost, then I say screw the bastards.

that's a misconception unsurper, I tanked heroics in worst gear than this. Its crazy to think you need t4 to do content that drops less than t4 gear. the mode of progression is:

5 mans -> heroics -> 10 mans -> 25 mans

it doesn't work the other ways around. If they think you are a scrub tank then they are fooled and should just grab their "godly" MT from their guild and GTFO.

Unsurper
02-04-2008, 05:22 PM
I fully realize the progression, I've tanked all of the dungeons on normal levels numerous times, every healer I've group with I asked afterwards how demanding it was for them to heal me......they say I was easy to keep healed compared to most tanks they have grouped with.
I use macros which insure shield block is always up when the gcd is up, that is not an issue.

I really, honestly don't have the time it requires to join a true raid guild right now, it would be unfair if I did because there are certain requirements as far as time/resources devoted towards a raid guild that are fairly expected, I 'am not going to be one of these people who uses others to obtain gear at my conveince.

Therefore I have to resort to pugs, unfortunately there is a rash of people with their welfare pvp epics now doing heroics, most of them don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, pvp gear imo is alright when used to fill gaps, but it is the worst setup imo because of the nature of the damage it produce which is for the most part burst damage which spikes unpredicably, still in all I still can do my job despite this, but can they do their ...no and I pay the price in the end.....I did my grind to set myself up to be the best tank possible within reason and they have done what to prepare themselves, shooting of 1k heals doesn't cut it, gearing dps as a healer because the gear happens to be epic doesn't cut it.

Bonerot
02-04-2008, 06:33 PM
Why not join a guild that just does 5 mans then? Not every pve guild raids. Then you'd get to know people and they'd get to know you. Earn some street cred.

It's very rare that I'd be willing to tank in my t4/badge gear for a pug, in fact I don't think I've ever done it. It's too expensive to waste time on people who can't manage to play their class at even 70% of it's ability so I only tank for friends and people they know don't suck or people from other sucessful raiding guilds.

Just a little constructive feedback from a new warrior -- I found this site while searching for something, don't remember what it was. I had a warrior, but was a little apprehensive about playing it much because I knew nothing about playing one. After spending some time on this site and all of the referenced sites, I started leveling my warrior. Thanks to all you expert contributers, I will ding lvl 70 tonight with around 485 defense (I could easily gem for 490, because it is all stam gems, but i expect another piece or two from this list). On our guild site, I am one of the primary contributors to the warrior forum and am bringing up issues that some of the "old" warriors were unaware of. Thanks for this list Polar and the awesome community effort Ciderhelm et all. You gave me a renewed interest in WOW and a lot to look forward to while improving my warrior.

I have a question about defense over 490.

After you are uncrittable are you better off stacking sta or continuing to pour on the defense to add more avoidance?

I have been concentrating on becoming uncrittable and then stacking hp. Using that theory the Aldor Breastplate isn't all that good, it has a ton of defense and dodge but it only has 40ish sta, my current bp has considerably more sta and some agility but less defense. I have the same issue with the shoulder slot. The current shoulders I have equipped have a ton of sta and some strength but no defense, but I have the shoulders from the Black Stalker (forget the name of them) that have quite a bit more defense.

I think I'm ok on the minimums, over 30% combined dodge and parry. 24%ish block, uncrittable (part defense part resiliance), 14500ac, 12400hp. The question now is what do I focus on improving to help the healers out?

Also I'm up for suggestions on gear improvements. I want to pick up some more hit if I can and I'm working on the questline for Gromtor's Charge, my current gear + racial is good for a -3.75% dodge/parry with axes so I think I'm pretty much stuck with an axe for a while.

Looking forward, as an orc is Suneater or Kings Defender any better than Gromtors charge for a tanking weapon? The DPS is so bad on Gromtors charge but the expertise from being an orc rocks.

Hi,

I have not included these in the list because:

(a) The Felsteel and Timewarden's legs are superior
(b) The Felsteel are very easy to obtain from the AH or in /trade
(c) The Maghari ones are from a horde only quest and it is a *long* chain

I agree that they are a good set though.

Hi,

Yes, similarly, it is a great sword but I have several listed already that are slightly better.

Out of them all, Crystalblade of the Draenei is very easy (and cheap) to obtain from the AH and is a nice tanking item. Although, the weapon you list has the nice advantage of having a little expertise rating on it. :)

Hi, you are well and truly ready to venture into Karazhan. I take it from your gear that you have not been in yet. It is the logical next step in your gearing and a lot of good gear drops from bosses in there, including bracers, belt, gloves, neck, helm and legs from the 1st half of the instance.

There is not one single stat that you are weak in, from what I can see, so I don't have any specific recommendations other than to build on all of your stats. There is certainly benefit to more defense after 490 and this is discussed in some detail in the guides on this site.

As for the axe and dps - I find that getting your shield slam/revenge/devastate/devastate combo working well gives bigger increases to threat than what you get from adding a few DPS to your weapon. I would not get too hung up on the weapon dps unless you are really struggling for threat generation.

The Sun Eater and Kings Defender are great weapons but the Expertise Racial bonus you get is also a great asset. Fortunately, it seems to have been kicked around already: Orc Warriors & Tanking with Axes - TankSpot (http://www.theoryspot.com/forums/general-discussion/34287-orc-warriors-tanking-axes.html)

There really aren't any good shoulders before Gruuls lair. The Pvp shoulders aren't ideal but they have terrific AC and a pile of sta. The resil helps if you're low def for some reason too.

Im current using the blade from Durn Crystalline Kopesh and was luckey to get a Crystalblade of the Draenei drop. but at the same time i was doing the quest: Declawing Doomclaw. from Mama Wheeler in Netherstorm. one of the rewards is Pilfered Ethereal Blade. Isnt Pilfered Ethereal Blade better than Crystalline Kopesh or close to being as good as it?

If given the choice I'd use the green, as I personally found a weapon above 1.8 speed a bit slow for tanking. I had the blue but generally used something else [Crystalblade of the Draenei]. I always found it annoying as it was a damn good reward, just a smidge slow.

I'd also make a beeline for SMV for the Grom'Tor axe as I wished I'd grabbed that earlier, as it did make a huge difference to what I was doing, and probably the easiest tanky weapon to get prior to KZ. Given it being a green I'm not sure I'd bother with a decent enchant unless you're seriously loaded, maybe crusader if anything tops.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoy the guides on here. A friend recommended this site to me when I started leveling my warrior. I'm no stranger to raiding and but have been primarily going as a healer. I made my tank because our guild needed one. I feel I'm getting close to being ready for Kara and heroics, but not quite sure since I don't have anyone to compare myself to.

I know that my weapon is a little slow for tanking. I've been working towards Inuuro's Blade. Should either be able to get that or the Thrallmar rep axe soon. Aside from enchants (which I am lacking terribly) is there anything else I could do to help be ready for heroics/Kara?

I will certainly consider PvP gear for the list especially if it is easy to get (ie. 15k honor points or less) and there is no trivial alternative on the list.

Thanks for this guide dude. You saved me tons of time, and by following it religiously, I went from green machine to 490 def / 12k hps inside of a week. Also I have one suggestion for gloves, and those are the dauntless handguards. Dauntless Handguards - Thottbot: World of Warcraft (http://thottbot.com/i25788). I know the point of your list is to focus on pieces that will serve a tank that is getting started in Karazhan, but, if your defense is over the cap, which it will be if this list is followed, these gloves are loads better than felsteel. And they're low hanging fruit: All you have to do for the quest is kill the first boss of normal shattered halls.

I don't quite agree with your statement "these gloves are loads better than felsteel". Personally, I think the felsteel gloves are better than the dauntless. Here's why:

Superior armor value
Extremely easy to obtain from AH (and often cheap, too)
2 sockets allowing whatever gem combo you want to improve your weaker stats
Dauntless gloves have 'block rating', which is arguably a mostly useless stat for warriors (but good for pallies wanting to push crushings off)

The good thing about dauntless is that you get some shield block value, which will help with better threat from shield slams.

If the Felsteel gloves were difficult to obtain then I would have dauntless up there in a flash though :)

Regards.

I propose a different factioning strategy post 2.4.

First of all, I think the #1 priority should be SSO rep to exalted. I know the point of this list thus far has been to avoid listing exalted-level reputation rewards, but SSO, I think, is special. Please hear me out. SSO exalted provides two items that will not be replaced for a long time: a threat neck and a shield (for while the neck will do as a survival piece). Besides getting two tank items for the price if your grind, instead of the usual 1 piece for other rep grinds, SSO is also relatively easier to get than Sha'tar, Cen Ex, or Aldor/Scryer. You get it by accident when you do the awesome money making circuit on IQD. If you throw in the 6x nagrand, bladestorm, netherstorm, hellfire penn, and SMV dailies, as well as the gathering daily, you net more than 3k rep (*I'm going to find the exact number today) and 150+ gold, and it takes me as a crappy prot warrior about 1 1/2 hours to do the whole circuit (tho I have epic flyer now). I went a week at 70 without doing IQD dailies and I'm kicking myself now. I think the number 1 thing to do as a new 70 is do your dailies religiously. Going for SSO also means you can ignore Sha'tar rep entirely and that saves time as well (log on, start doing IQD dailies, put on the LFG: MGT sign).

Why?

1. SSO revered provides a tanking sword which is on par or better than the heroic mechanar dropped sword. (And farming Heroic Mech was one usual way to get Sha'tar rep).

Compare for yourself: Inuuro's Blade - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34672) The Sun Eater - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29362)

2. SSO exalted provides a shield that is on par with the Sha'tar exalted shield, but SSO is incredibly easy to attain. You be the judge:

Dawnforged Defender - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34676) (SSO) vs Crest of the Sha'tar - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29176).

SSO is extremely easy to farm to exalted; I would dare to say it's as easy to get SSO to exalted as Aldor/Scryer to revered. MGT is a great little instance that yields 2k rep per run and I recommending running it into the ground on normal as you gear up so you can be experienced with MGT when you go back there for heroic.

Also, 2.4 means it is time to revisit the old debate of Scryer vs. Aldor. This is because the Scryer's Pendant of Resolve proc is better than Aldor, and Scryer rep items cost less than half as much on my server since 2.4 and MGT/IQD Dailies.

What you get from SSO
Inuuro's Blade - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34672) (Revered)
Shattered Sun Pendant of Resolve - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34680) (Exalted; Exalted Aldor/Scryer)
Dawnforged Defender - Item - World of Warcraft (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34676) (Exalted)

As well as a bunch of ilvl 115 blue weapons for those times when you DPS or solo, and an 18sta/resi glyph.

Polar
05-19-2008, 07:11 PM
Yes, I tend to agree with the SSO strategy. That shield is far too good to pass up :)

Although, I am not 100% convinced on going scryer just for the proc on the pendant. You miss out on the Aldor chest piece if you go this path. The Aldor chest will last you all the way through until you get the chest off Nightbane or Magtheridon whereas the neck piece can be upgraded with the neck off Maiden.

Happy to hear if anyone else has an opinion on this. :)

Another reason to work that SSO rep: I have been finding KoT rep a little hard to come by, so I have been using Glyph of the Gladiator on my helmet. Nice stamina boost and the 20 resilience lowers the uncrittable defense requirement to 477, if my math is correct.

You look fine to tank Karazhan and heroics. Your 218 resilience is ensuring that you are crit immune even though you don't have too much defense.

Your health and armor values are quite adequate - in fact, your armor is great.

Your dodge is probably the area that you need to work on next - your avoidance is a bit low.

Also shuld i use the War. tyoe weapons or the mage type? like a mace or sword that has spell dammage or high DPS "somthing more a war would use.... since a war going for somthing with 80 dps vs. the 41.5 dps and spell dammage".... ? first and foremost you need to survive so use whatever you need from this list (warrior type) to get to the minimum stats, then once you have better gear, grab a threat weapon (Continuum Blade is a good baseline for paladins) and put +40 spell damage on it, until you grab tier gear or badge gear, this will probably be your only source of spell damage so it'll help a lot with your TPS.

Ciderhelm and Polar – thank you both very much for setting so many tanks on the road, both at and before level 70. As Polar determines the helm, chest, legs and shield are priority items I should mention that I do touch on all of these slots among my humble suggestions, having first read every posting here and the majority of Cider’s compilation/compendium on tanking theory. Everyone reading this should do that. I tackle my list of potentially worthy mentionables in the same slot order as the existing front page posting, which I have enjoyed hunting and collecting through.

HEAD: Unlike the excellent Felsteel Helm, the Gladiator’s Plate Helm has a meta slot for Powerful Earthstorm Diamond. Combined with its high armor, high stam, resilience (and set resil bonus) it is a serious contender. The head ench slot could mention the SSO Revered Glyph and the Heavy Knothide Armor Kit.

SHOULDERS: The Heavy Knothide Armor Kit I mentioned above is also good for shoulders, especially if you struggle to pay AH prices for the required Aldor/Scryer hand-ins. This versatile 10 stam boost comes for the price of 3 Heavy Knothide Leather from the AH or a friendly LW. It’ll also work on your chest if the mats for +150HP are proving costly.

CLOAK: There are a plethora of cheap lvl 65+ greens randomly on the AH. Many have stamina and agility base stats and are worthy of consideration to begin with.

LEGS: The Gladiator’s Plate Legguards (and chest) give +hit which is good for threat. Given that the PvP chest, helm and shoulders have gem slots, the +2 set bonus of 35 resilience is very feasible without endless grinding – and having resilience helps with magic damage in a way that armor alone may not. These legs have a whopping 1353 armor and 55 stam, 40 str (worth 2 block points) and that 12 hit I mentioned. If you have done a lot of PvP or don't have the full Felsteel set bonus – do look at these.

Nethercleft Leg Armor is a possible option if you can afford the mats, or can get that friendly LW you know to make a set for you. To be honest, befriending or being a 375 BS, Ench, JC, LW, and Trans Alch covers many of your Warrior/Tanking needs.

FEET: The costly Boar’s Speed ench is worthy of note in my opinion, if Mongoose is deemed ok for the wep on the existing list of suggested items.

GLOVES: Again, if you have an incomplete Felsteel (the solid starter) set, Gladiator’s Plate Gauntlets high armor and stam, resilience and that +2 set bonus resilience – as well as enough str for 1 more block point. The only downside of the Gladiators items is that they do not come with Defence. Also, the Legs and Gloves do not have gem slots like the other three items. However, if you are factoring in the resilience these items do help to achieve that mighty mantra for noob 70 tanks – pack on the armor and stamina.

TRINKET: If, like so many Fury/Arms talent based lvlers, you missed the Regal Protectorate in favour of the Bladefist’s Breadth, consider the 22 hit and 140AP boost of the Terokkar Tablet of Precision or the 20 resilience and movement control life saver of the PvP Medallion of the Horde. Trinkets are so hard to come by that I really do feel these are worthy of mention, particularly as they respectively add threat and may save your healer’s life and thus prevent a stressful wipe.

ENCH: There are many Vision Dust, Dream Dust and Nether Essence enchants that cash strapped 70s may wish to consider, if they find the Large Prismatic Shards and Greater Planar Essence costs prohibitive. They may only give half of the stats of the top ench for item slots, but you are progressing through gear and they cost next to nothing to have.

SUGGESTIONS: Could the SSO Glyph (Revered), Shield and Neck items be included in your front page list, even though two of the items are exalted? It only takes a couple of weeks to get the rep via MGT and the 11 Isle dailies and 7 or 8 Outland dailies (8 if you have a gathering profession) post 2.4 - and these items are now very much among the current "low-cost" benchmarks for people to aim for, as they gather their gear into early Karazhan territory.

QUESTIONS: Would you rate the Inuuro’s Blade speed of 1.4 and its expertise of 11 ahead of an epic Dragonstrike with Mongoose? I currently use this mace as my DW offhand for SSO grinding, with another Dragonstrike Executioner in my MH. However, I respect that the Inuuro’s Blade is very special to tanks for a blue and I ask you if it is worth me getting it with Mongoose or should I wait until I have braved Karazhan? I am getting ready to raid and I know I have a tough choice to make here in New Zealand about US versus Oceanic server times.

This is a great list, I have used it myself alot. I have got most of those items myself, some better items and some worse items...

Myself I diden't find the Netherwing trinket hard to get, 1 retri pala and 1 prot warrior made it quite nicely:)

Another reason to work that SSO rep: I have been finding KoT rep a little hard to come by, so I have been using Glyph of the Gladiator on my helmet. Nice stamina boost and the 20 resilience lowers the uncrittable defense requirement to 477, if my math is correct.

I think I've nearly reached my target stats if this is true. I have 487 Defense currently. I still want shoulders, bracers, feet, and mongoose for my sword.

Do you agree?

Edit: I broke down and bought Bracers of the Green Fortress which put me at 491 defense. I'm now just a few hitpoints short of 12k unbuffed. I'm running Auch Crypts for Lower City Shoulders and practice tanking.

I'd like to thank everyone who made contributions to this thread. You made starting my tanking career so much simpler.

Loads of great info and will for sure follow

Btw i have seen some tanks running around with the deathfrost enchant Enchant Weapon - Deathfrost - Thottbot: World of Warcraft (http://thottbot.com/s46578) ...is that good over moongoose or are the tanks saving gold

Saving gold. The melee effect is equivalent to thunderclap. So if it's a warrior tank, improved thunderclap should be what they're using to debuff melee (the effects don't stack either).

Not sure if it's worth it for pally's since they don't get thunderclap, but I assume other enchants are still better for them.

when you say dodge+parry to be 30% you mean each one of them 30% or both of them to equal 30%(like 14%+16%)

Ty Ty Ty.....as a prot for 70 levels warrior I was dreading dinging 70 today. However I feel much better now knowing my goal of starting Kara runs isn't as far away as I thought. I already have some of the quest gear you suggested and IM not far off of the 490 defense mark 420 now unbuffed and depending on what set I wear almost 11k hp and 11900 armor. I am gonna ding today and now have a much better idea of what to work for. I am however gonna grind some rep and marks in the 60-69 bgs before I ding. I was afraid to be laughed at if I showed up in any of that gear but now I can quote this great site and post as my reason for grabbing them lol.

Again TY for the work put into compliling this post!

Thanks for the list, it has helped me well!

I do have a query regarding trinkets though - I passed on the Regal Protectorate as I was only low 60 and was looking for arms items then for levelling at the time...it was aaaages ago.

Because of this I am left with Dabiri's Enigma and have a spare Trinket slot - the only two trinkets worth getting are both from Instance drops (SL & SH, of which I havn't had a drop yet despite running each instance around 7 times).

Is there any other alternative quest/rep trinket which could be used in the meantime? Even a green would be more useful than nothing.

I noticed this mentioned here a couple of times as a quest from Netherstorm, but its actually the last step in the chain you get from Altruis, the NE with the netherdrake in eastern Nagrand. The name of the quest is correct, just not the location.
Nice chestpiece though, I'll be using it for a while, and though the quest says 3 man, at 68 a tank can duo it with a high dps class (a guildie fire mage and I did it two days ago.)

Some update comments from Wow 3.0:

1. Crushing blows have been removed from bosses 3 levels above you - this means that shield block and holy shield are less important to have up at all possible times.

2. 490 defense is still important - just because crushing blows have been removed, bosses can still crit you! You still need to get to 490 defense as a priority (or 490 minus your resilience)

3. The threat mechanics have changed to favor Strength some more. While the gear list does not change, be on the lookout for any tank gear that has some strength on it as well. (There will be lots of this come Wrath time)

Awesome Polar, thanks for posting as I was just checking for 3.0 updates. With Shield Slam so important now, does it benefit from more Strength (Attack Power)? Or does it just scale with talents and Block Value?

Kazeyonoma
10-20-2008, 11:35 AM
both.

the blockvalue talents obviously scale it faster, as does straight SBV because SBV itemization is cheaper than str on our current gear options, but you're not ALL about shield slam, it's the most important skill of course, but you likewise want to have devastates and revenges which are ap based so having str doubles for them AND SBV so normally I'd say go with STR =]

Hey Polar, I just noticed this thread and the last thing you wrote. I put together a list as well of WotLK "gear to get". Check it out, maybe we can consolidate the two lists together, and make a more powerful entity.
